Our 7-Day Road Trip:
If you only have one week in Scotland, this is the ultimate, bucket–list drive to see it all — from historic Edinburgh and Glasgow to the rugged Highlands, Glencoe, and Isle of Skye. This flexible itinerary blends iconic sights with hidden gems, weaving together nature, culture, and adventure in the perfect Scotland road trip loop.

Bonus! Convert Our Route Into 2-weeks:
Like the idea of our hit-it-all road trip route, but you wish it were just a bit longer? Luckily it is quite easy to expand!
Which sections of the road trip you choose to expand into more days and which detours you’ll take depend on your travel goals and what top sights stood out to you the most in our list above. Here’s how we suggest to tailor it:
🏔️ Outdoor Adventurers
Add an extra day (or a few!) in the Highlands for hiking and outdoor adventures. Glencoe offers some of Scotland’s most dramatic mountain trails, the Isle of Skye has world-famous hikes like the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing, and Cairngorms National Park is perfect for longer treks, wildlife spotting, and scenic drives.
🏙️ City Lovers
Spend at least 2–3 more days exploring each of Scotland’s vibrant cities. Dive into Glasgow’s creative culture and street art scene (our favorite city!), stroll Inverness’s riverfront and nearby castles, and soak up the historic charm, pubs, and museums of Edinburgh (a city you could spend ages in!).
🏰 History Buffs
History lovers should add more time in Edinburgh and add on a day or two in Stirling for ancient castles, battlefields, and royal landmarks. Don’t miss Doune Castle (a filming favorite near Stirling), the Glenfinnan Viaduct (near Fort William), Eilean Donan Castle en route to Skye (currently in the plan), and the Culloden Battlefield near Inverness – each part of various, fascinating chapters of Scotland’s story.
🌊 Romantic Wanderers & Slow Travelers
If you prefer a slower pace and scenic moments, extend your stay along the west coast (from Glasgow up to Portree) or on the Isle of Skye. Watch sunsets at either of the points in Skye (Neist or Brothers), enjoy peaceful beach walks near Arisaig (near Fort William), and unwind with local seafood in Portree (Isle of Skye) or Oban (west coast).

North Coast 500 (AKA Scotland’s Route 66):
Scotland’s most famous road trip, the North Coast 500, circles the northern Highlands for over 500 miles of dramatic coastal scenery, white-sand beaches, and ancient ruins. Often dubbed “Scotland’s Route 66”, it is ideal for those craving wilderness and raw beauty!
Focus: Wild Highland scenery, remote beaches, castles, and small lochside towns like Durness, Applecross, and Ullapool.
The route: The far north and northwest of Scotland. There are hundreds of possible stops, so be sure to check out the full map here to help plan your NC500 road trip.
Argyll Coastal Route:
Winding from Tarbet to Fort William, the Argyll Coastal Route is all about rugged coastlines, fishing villages, and tranquil lochs. Stop for whisky tastings, seaside strolls, and castle views – this 129-mile route is perfect for travelers who want a slower, scenic journey through authentic western Scotland.
Focus: Coastal landscapes, seafood towns (like Oban), castle ruins, and connections to ancient Scottish history.
The route: Western Scotland – Another one with hundreds of potential stops, so check out info on the region to help plan your stops here!
Heart 200
The Heart 200 loops through the heart of Scotland, connecting Stirling, Perth, and the Trossachs National Park. It’s the ideal choice for a central Scotland adventure – think lush forests, hidden waterfalls, historic towns, and easy access to both nature and culture without long drives.
Focus: Central Scotland’s rich history, scenic lochs (like Loch Tay), and charming small towns (like Pitlochry and Dunkeld).
The route: Central belt and lower Highlands – MMMM. Explore the route and other possible stops here!
Skye Loop (Trotternish Loop)
The Isle of Skye Loop is packed with dramatic cliffs, fairy-tale landscapes, and otherworldly sights like the Old Man of Storr and Fairy Pools. Whether done as a full loop from the mainland or an add-on to another route (it is ideal for 2-3 days!), this drive showcases some of Scotland’s most breathtaking scenery!
Focus: Pure Isle of Skye focus. Iconic stops like the Quiraing, Fairy Pools, Neist Point, and Old Man of Storr.
The route: Isle of Skye – This is less of a set route and more of a general area to explore. Pick your stops based on our suggestions in the ‘Top Sights’ section above or by Googling the best Isle of Skye stops.
Borders Historic Route
Perfect for history lovers, the Borders Historic Route runs from Carlisle to Edinburgh, tracing centuries of Scottish heritage through rolling hills, abbey ruins, and charming villages. It’s less crowded than the Highlands and offers a peaceful, story-filled 90-mile drive through southern Scotland’s hidden beauty.
Focus: A quiet, castle-filled region of rolling hills, abbeys, and stately homes often overlooked by tourists. History, literature, and charming market towns like Melrose, Peebles, and Jedburgh.
