If you’re trying to figure out how many days in Edinburgh you need, the short answer is: it depends on your travel style — but we highly recommend at least two full days.

Edinburgh is certainly compact compared to most big cities, but once you start exploring you’ll realize there’s a decent amount to see and do!

Two full days gives you enough time to experience the city properly while still potentially leaving room in your full itinerary to explore other incredible parts of Scotland like the Highlands or the Isle of Skye.

That said, if you’re short on time one day in Edinburgh is absolutely still worth it. It’s a vibrant, history-packed city that’s easy to fall in love with, even on a quick visit, and we’d recommend adding it to just about any Scotland itinerary!

To further help you decide what length of trip might be best for you, here’s how we would categorize 1, 2, and 3 days in Edinburgh:

• 1 day in Edinburgh → Fast-paced, highlights only. You’ll definitely be able to see the main sights, but it’ll be a pretty full-on day. Best for: Travelers on a tight schedule or those adding Edinburgh as a brief stop on a longer trip.

• 2 days in Edinburgh → You’ll cover the major attractions and have time for a few hidden gems without feeling too rushed. Most ideal to insert into a longer Scotland trip! Best for: First-time visitors who want a well-balanced experience.

• 3 days in Edinburgh → More relaxed experience, ideal for immersing yourself a bit into the local vibe. You can explore at a slower pace, visit additional neighborhoods, and see even more of Edinburgh. Best for: Travelers who want a more relaxed pace and a deeper feel for the city.

1 Day in Edinburgh Itinerary (Fast-Paced Highlights)

If you only have one day in Edinburgh, don’t worry! As we’ve said above, you can absolutely still experience a lot. Just be prepared for a full day with plenty of walking (and a lot of hills – seriously, bring your comfiest sneakers).

This itinerary focuses on must-see highlights, all clustered within a walkable area so you can make the most of your time!

2 Days in Edinburgh Itinerary (Best Balance)

If you have two days in Edinburgh, you’re in the ideal spot!

This gives you enough time to see all the major highlights without rushing, while also adding in a few of the city’s lesser known sites and quieter corners.

You get the best of Edinburgh, but still have time to explore more of Scotland on the same trip.

3 Days in Edinburgh Itinerary (Complete Experience)

By this point, you’ve already seen all the major highlights, so Day 3 is all about wandering, discovering more local neighborhoods, and experiencing the city beyond the typical tourist checklist.

Today is intentionally more flexible so you can spend more time exploring what you personally love most about the city!

Where to Stay in Edinburgh

The good news is that you really can’t go too wrong with choosing where to stay in Edinburgh, but here’s how to pick the best area based on your travel style:

Note: If you have a rental car, be sure to triple check parking at your stay. It can be extremely lacking and extremely expensive in the city, so be sure to look for places with free parking!

How to Get Around Edinburgh

One of the best things about Edinburgh is that you really don’t need a car!

The city is compact, walkable, and very well-connected by public transport (which is also quite cheap) and this makes getting around very easy and budget-friendly.

Walking (Best Option)

For most of your trip, walking will be your go-to.

The main sights are all pretty close together, especially around Old Town and New Town. Just be prepared for hills (there are definitely a few) and cobblestone streets (wear comfy shoes!).

Public Transportation

If you need a break from walking or are heading a bit farther out, Edinburgh’s public transport system is reliable and easy to use.

You’ll mainly use buses, but there are also trams for certain routes!

To use it, you just tell the driver how many tickets you’ll need, tap the pay box with a contactless card (or smart phone), and it will automatically charge you for a single trip. Many services have a daily fare cap, so you’ll tap each time you get on, but won’t pay more than a set amount per person, per day!

If you don’t have a contactless card or smart phone, or if you just need more info, head to one of the tourist centers (like this one) and they will help you get it sorted. Bus drivers are very kind and helpful if you have any questions, as well.

Very Important Tip: Always use the same card / device for every trip.
The system tracks your daily cap per card, so if you switch cards, you will end up paying more than necessary.

Taxis & Ridesharing

Taxis and rideshares are available, but they’re significantly more expensive than buses or walking and honestly not even that much quicker in many cases, due to traffic.

We would only suggest this if it’s late at night or terrible weather and you are heading somewhere outside of the city center and have a bigger budget.

Otherwise, public transport or walking are much better options!

Top Tips for Visiting Edinburgh

Before you arrive in Edinburgh, here are a few quick tips to help you make the most of your time in the city:

Book Major Attractions Well in Advance

Popular spots like Edinburgh Castle and top tours tend to sell out very quick, especially in peak season.

Booking ahead ensures you get a spot, helps you secure your preferred time (which is so important for short trips!), avoid the long lines, and sometimes even save extra money.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

Between the hills, cobblestones, and long walking days… your feet are going to feel it, trust me.

Good walking shoes are a must here. Big bonus if they are waterproof!

Be Ready for Changing Weather

Edinburgh weather can shift quickly, even in summer. In fact summer in Scotland brings more rain than winter in many other regions!

Make sure that you bring a good waterproof jacket, layers that are easy to take on and off, a small umbrella or poncho, and those aforementioned good walking shoes (ideally waterproof).

Card is King in Edinburgh

Most places in Edinburgh accept card payments, and many are even cashless!

We suggest carrying a small amount of cash for tips (especially for tours) and in case of emergencies, but you likely won’t need it.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Edinburgh?

The best time to visit Edinburgh depends on your priorities. Weather, crowds, and budget can vary a lot throughout the year!

Spring (April–May) & Fall (September–October): Best Overall

If you’re looking for the sweet spot, this is it.

During these shoulder seasons, you’ll get fewer crowds, lower accommodation prices, milder (but still unpredictable) weather, and an easier time getting spots for tours, attraction visits, restaurant reservations, and more.

It’s a great time to explore the city comfortably without all the peak-season chaos!

Summer (June–August): Best Weather, Biggest Crowds

Summer brings the warmest weather, long daylight hours, and a lively atmosphere… but it also means higher prices, much larger crowds, and limited availability and space for everything from accommodation to tours to a simple café visit.

August is especially busy due to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival.

If you plan to visit during summer, and especially if you plan to go to the festival, book everything well in advance. And by that, I mean the second you know the dates you’ll visit? Book. Otherwise you’ll either miss out or be selling your kidney just to book a sub-par accommodation or tour.

Winter (November–March): Quietest & Most Budget-Friendly

Winter is the least crowded (and often cheapest) time to visit.

This means you can generally book things later without much worry and you’ll also be able to enjoy everything with much fewer tourists. Plus, you’ll get a very cozy, festive atmosphere in November and December!

Just keep in mind that you’ll have quite a bit fewer daylight hours, very cold and wet weather, and some attractions may also have reduced hours.

But here’s the good news: Scotland on a budget is absolutely doable, so long as you know a few smart tricks.

On average, you can expect to spend anywhere from £100 to £300+ per day depending on your travel style, but with the right strategy, it’s possible to stay on the lower end of that range or even well below it (without missing out on the experiences that make Scotland so special).

After traveling around the country ourselves (and swapping notes with plenty of other travelers along the way), we quickly realized that the difference between an expensive trip and an affordable one in Scotland often comes down to strategy, not sacrifice.

Think: choosing the right season, booking smarter, taking advantage of the tools available, and just knowing where to splurge vs. where to save.

In this guide, we’re breaking down 25 practical Scotland money-saving tips to help you cut costs on transportation, accommodation, food, and activities — without sacrificing any of the magic. Plus we even toss in a few key budget mistakes that you should avoid if you don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for your trip!

So whether you’re planning a full road trip, a city-hopping adventure, or your very first visit, these tips will help you stretch your budget way further than you might expect.

Budget Planning Essentials

1. Travel During Shoulder Seasons

This should not come as any surprise if you have ever looked up travel budget tips in the past, but if you’re trying to experience Scotland on a budget, when you travel can make a bigger difference than just about everything else!

The sweet spots for Scotland? April–May and September–October.

During these shoulder seasons, you’ll typically find lower prices on accommodation and rental cars, better deals on tours and activities, and fewer crowds at major attractions (yes, even top places like Skye!)

This also gives you something incredibly valuable: flexibility.

Instead of scrambling to book whatever is left (often at higher prices) because tons of other travelers are booking the same time as you, you can actually compare options, choose top-rated tours, and avoid those “well… this is all that’s available” moments that tend to blow your budget really fast.

Plus the experience is often better during shoulder season anyway. You’ll get moody landscapes (which make for the most stunning views and photos), fewer tour buses (which congest the road like you wouldn’t believe), and a much more relaxed vibe overall.

Big budget mistake to avoid: Traveling in peak season (June–August) without booking far in advance. Prices skyrocket, availability disappears, and you’ll often end up paying significantly more for worse options! Aim for booking everything a minimum of 6-12 months in advance if you must travel in summer.

3. Consider Flexible Destinations

One of the easiest ways to save money in Scotland? Don’t get too locked into the “must-see” hotspots!

Places like the Isle of Skye are undeniably incredible, yes… but they’re also some of the most expensive areas in the country, especially in peak season.

Instead, consider swapping or supplementing with lesser-known destinations like:

• Oban instead of Portree
• The Cairngorms instead of Skye
• Smaller Highland villages instead of the major tourist hubs

You’ll often find cheaper accommodation, better availability, fewer crowds, and a more local, authentic experience. A win-win in our eyes!

Plus, you can usually make a day trip to a must-see hotspot (which will be significantly cheaper than spending >1 day there) or just go on a future trip when the budget has a little bit more wiggle room.

Scotland is packed with stunning landscapes, so don’t worry — you’re not really “missing out,” you’re just experiencing it differently (and more affordably!).

Saving on Transportation

5. Use Transport Passes (Citylink vs. ScotRail)

If you’re not renting a car, transport passes can be a great way to save money traveling around Scotland, but choosing the right one matters.

There are two main options:

Bus Travel: The Scottish Citylink Explorer Pass

This pass gives you unlimited travel on Citylink buses for a set number of days (3, 5, or 8), covering major routes between cities and popular destinations like Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Fort William, and even a bit of the Isle of Skye.

It’s great for travelers on a budget because it’s a fixed cost (so no surprises!), it’s cheaper than booking multiple individual tickets, and it covers long distances that would otherwise add up quickly.

This pass works best if you’re city-hopping, following a loose route, and not planning to explore remote areas too much.

It’s less ideal if you want total flexibility, plan to stop in small villages and regions, or want to attempt a road trip style itinerary (like ours!).

Train Travel: The Spirit of Scotland Travelpass

If you prefer trains over buses, the Spirit of Scotland Travel Pass is another good option for budget travel in Scotland!

This pass gives you unlimited travel on ScotRail trains with decent coverage across a large portion of the country and flexible travel days (4 or 8) within a set time period.

It’s especially useful for scenic train routes (some of the best in the UK!), travelers who prefer comfort over buses, and those sticking to particularly well-connected areas. The Travel Pass site gives two example itineraries using their pass here!

Which one should you choose?

Before you make the final decision on which is best for you, let’s briefly cover the main differences between Citylink and ScotRail:

• Citylink → cheaper, buses only, wider rural access, more day options (3, 5, or 8)
• ScotRail pass → more comfortable, faster in some cases, limited to rail lines and therefore less country coverage

Big budget mistake to avoid: Buying a rail or bus pass without checking your actual route. Not only to ensure coverage, but if you’re only traveling a short distance or making just a couple of smaller trips, individual tickets are often cheaper!

7. Use Local Buses for Rural Areas

This one surprises a lot of people, but there are local buses in more remote areas and they can be very affordable!

They connect many towns and villages, including some pretty remote areas, and are often much cheaper than trains, tour buses, or other long-distance services.

However, there’s a catch (and it’s an important one): routes can be limited and schedules aren’t very frequent — some areas have very few, if any, daily connections.

So while local buses are a great budget-friendly option, they will require a bit more planning and flexibility.

This tip is best if you have a slower-paced itinerary, don’t mind structuring your travel days around transport times, and are traveling light.

Saving on Accommodation

10. Check Into Hostels

Hostels in Scotland are not what a lot of people expect, especially in more remote, scenic areas.

Organizations like Hostelling Scotland (formerly SYHA) run some seriously impressive and beautiful properties right in the middle of nature in places like Glencoe, Isle of Skye, or The Cairngorms and HostelWorld has a plethora of similarly amazing options!

As with many hostels, there are almost always private room options (not just dorms!) and so it’s great for solo travelers, backpackers, and couples or anyone who prefers more private sleeping arrangements alike.

Matze and I frequently stay in private rooms in hostels, because you can usually save a bit of money compared to hotels and other accommodation, and you also get the social aspect of hostels. We have met some of the most interesting and fun people and gone on some of the best tours during hostel stays!

13. Book More Remote Stays Instead of Tourist Hubs

One of the easiest ways to cut accommodation costs is to simply not stay directly in the most popular locations.

For example stay near the Isle of Skye instead of on it and drive in for day trips, choose a neighborhood just outside of Edinburgh and take public transportation in, etc.

You’ll almost always find lower nightly rates, much more availability, and better value overall!

And if you have a car or are near a good public transit system, the trade-off is extremely minimal — you’re just a short drive or ride away from everything.

Matze and I like to stay outside of cities and tourist hotspots anyway, but it was extra beneficial and extra easy in Scotland. Their public transportation in cities is spectacular and very cheap and we had our rental car for day trips — we never regretted our decision once!

Saving on Food & Drink

15. Eat at Local Pubs, Bakeries, and Cafés Instead of Restaurants

If you want to experience Scottish food and keep your budget in check, bakeries and cafés for lunch and local pubs for dinner will be your best friends.

Bakeries and cafés, especially smaller ones off the beaten path, will have tons of delicious food (usually fully homemade) for fairly cheap. There are often great lunchtime specials too!

For dinner, compared to more formal restaurants, pubs typically offer lower-priced mains, good portion sizes, daily specials or early dinner deals, and an extra relaxed atmosphere which you may prefer! And you’ll still find plenty of classic dishes like fish and chips, steak pie, and hearty soups — just at a more reasonable price point.

Some of our favorite meals in Scotland were in cozy little spots, not fancy restaurants, so make sure to at least try a few out during your trip! I mean just look at that sourdough bread with honey whipped goats cheese, candied nuts, and figs above. I’m drooling just thinking back on it, haha.

19. Take Advantage of Breakfast-Included Stays

If your accommodation includes breakfast — use it strategically.

A full Scottish breakfast is no joke. We’re talking eggs, sausages, toast, black and white pudding, beans, grilled vegetables, and sometimes even more!

It’s the kind of meal that can easily keep you full until late afternoon… which often means you can downsize or even skip lunch entirely!

That’s another double win: saving money and spending less time worrying about your next meal and trying to fit it into your busy schedule.

Also, if you’re booking accommodation through Booking, it’s worth noting that once you reach Genius Level 2+ in their rewards program, you’ll get perks like free breakfast at select properties, plus the usual discounts and occasional room upgrades.

Saving on Activities & Sightseeing

21. Visit Lesser-Known Castles

Let’s be honest — castles are one of the main reasons people visit Scotland.

But big names like Edinburgh Castle or Eilean Donan Castle come with pretty hefty entrance fees and sometimes (I’m looking at you, Urquhart Castle) they just don’t offer enough to justify the price, even if it is small.

The good news? There are tons of lesser-known castles and ruins that are much cheaper (sometimes even free!) and far less crowded.

Here are a few incredible cheap or free options to look into:

• Doune Castle (For all you GoT, Monty Python, and Outlander fans!)
• Kilchurn Castle (free)
• Dunnottar Castle
• Castle Sinclair Girnigoe (free)

You’ll still get that iconic Scottish castle experience — just without the premium price tag and shoulder to shoulder crowds.

Big budget mistake to avoid: Only visiting the “famous” castles. Not only are they more expensive, but they’re more crowded and you’ll miss out on some seriously underrated, stunning spots.

23. Look for Combo-Tickets

Another super easy way to save? Bundle your experiences when possible.

Many providers offer discounted combo tickets for things like whisky distillery tours, wildlife excursions, boat tours or ferries, and more.

You can also find lots of day tours that bundle lots of individual activities or sites into one, like these ones here!

So instead of booking everything separately, especially in a single region, look for packages that combine multiple activities and compare prices — they’ll often be a bit better!

Scotland might not be a destination that comes to mind when you think of adrenaline-packed travel, but it should absolutely be on your list!

With its rugged coastlines, icy lochs, towering Munros, dramatic waterfalls, and unpredictable weather, Scotland is one of Europe’s most surprising adventure playgrounds.

And this isn’t just about scenic hikes and pretty viewpoints — this is about whitewater rafting through rushing rivers, ice climbing up frozen mountainsides, ridge hiking along knife-edge peaks, and even throwing yourself off of ocean cliffs (on purpose).

When we first visited Scotland on our 7-day road trip, we knew it would be beautiful, but we didn’t realize just how many adventurous things to do in Scotland there would be. One of the highlights of our trip was coasteering, and it completely changed how we see Scotland as a destination.

As travelers who love adrenaline (we’re talking everything from skydiving and bungee jumping to whitewater rafting, swimming with sharks, and more), this country quickly earned a spot on our list for round two!

So if you’re ready to experience Scotland in a way that goes far beyond the usual castles and whisky tastings, here are 17 of the most adventurous things to do in Scotland.

1. Coasteering

If scrambling over rocks, leaping into icy ocean water, and exploring Scotland’s coastline first-hand sounds like your kind of adventure, coasteering will be the perfect activity to add to your Scotland itinerary!

Coasteering is a guided coastal adventure that combines cliff jumping, rock scrambling, ocean swimming, and navigating rocky shorelines in order to explore parts Scotland’s dramatic coastline that are otherwise nearly impossible to reach. Thick wetsuits, helmets, safety gear, and an experienced instructor are all provided, making it accessible even for absolute beginners and families with kids.

Coasteering tours are offered in several locations around Scotland, including Fort William, St Andrews, Arbroath, the Moray Firth coastline, and the Isle of Skye.

Matze and I went coasteering near Fort William, and it was easily one of the top highlights of our entire trip. We were absolutely freezing at first, but our guide had us play a few ridiculous warm-up games and even brought hot tea for a mid-tour break. Along the way we also learned about the local ecosystem, spotted a bit of wildlife, and sampled some surprisingly tasty plants, like Wood Sorrel (yum!) and a type of seaweed that tasted a bit like garlic.

If you’re looking for one of the most underrated adventurous things to do in Scotland (seriously, WHY do people not talk about this more!?!?), coasteering offers the perfect mix of adrenaline, exploration, and unforgettable coastal scenery.

2. Whitewater Rafting

For pure adrenaline mixed with incredible scenery, whitewater rafting is hands down one of the most exciting things to do in Scotland.

Several rivers across the Highlands offer fantastic rafting opportunities, with the River Tummel and River Tay being the most popular. Most of these trips run rapids ranging from Class II to Class IV, making them thrilling without requiring previous rafting experience.

One of the most exciting times to go is during the famous dam-release sessions on the River Tummel, when controlled water releases during summer weekends create powerful rapids!

Some adventure centers also offer inner tubing or something called river bugging (or funyakking) — essentially solo whitewater rafting! You don’t usually need experience for this either, as a professional guide will be with you in their own inflatable the whole time and this is usually offered on more gentle rapids.

Whitewater rafting has been one of Matze and my favorite adventure activities ever since we first tried it in Costa Rica (you can read a bit about it and see photos in our Puerto Viejo city guide here). While we haven’t managed to raft in Scotland yet, but it’s absolutely at the top of our list for our next visit, because very few things are as thrilling, fun, and scenic as charging down a roaring river surrounded by the beautiful nature!

3. Canyoning and Waterfall Abseiling

Imagine sliding down natural rock chutes, exploring rocky gorges, leaping into clear mountain pools, and rappelling straight down a waterfall — that’s canyoning in Scotland!

Canyoning (sometimes called canyoneering) involves navigating steep river gorges using a mix of climbing, sliding, swimming, and jumping through the natural rock formations. Waterfall abseiling (also called rappelling) focuses specifically on descending waterfalls with ropes. In Scotland, most guided canyoning tours combine all of these elements into a single adventure!

Some of the best places to try it include the waterfalls at the Falls of Bruar, the canyons near Inchree Falls, the dramatic gorge beside Grey Mare’s Tail, and several routes around Perthshire and Pass of Killiecrankie.

With its steep terrain, powerful waterfalls, and variety of glens, Scotland is easily one of the best places in the UK to try this adrenaline-packed adventure!

4. “Grey Mare’s Tail” Via Ferrata

For a climbing-style adventure without needing technical mountaineering skills, Scotland’s via ferrata offers an unforgettable way to scale the country’s dramatic cliffs!

Scotland’s only via ferrata is located in Kinlochleven and often called the “Grey Mare’s Tail” via ferrata. You’ll follow a fixed system of cables, ladders, and metal rungs built into the rock face beside and above Grey Mare’s Tail Waterfall – one of Scotland’s tallest waterfalls at 80m / 262ft!

The Kinlochleven via ferrata is generally considered easy to moderate in difficulty, making it suitable for most people (even kids), so long as you are alright with heights.

Despite being Scotland’s only via ferrata route, Grey Mare’s Tale is still considered one of the most scenic and top options in the entire UK thanks to its dramatic Highland setting, racing waterfall and gorge, and the fairly easy level!

5. Bungee Jumping

If throwing yourself off a platform into a dramatic Highland gorge sounds like your kind of fun (honestly, same), bungee jumping in Scotland absolutely delivers.

The spot to go is Killiecrankie, home to the UK’s first ever permanent static bungee jump. Here, you’ll leap from a 40 meter (131 foot) platform over the River Garry (pictured above), surrounded by forests and a seriously stunning gorge.

At the moment, Killiecrankie is still the main (and most reliable) place to go bungee jumping in Scotland, though occasional pop–up crane jumps sometimes appear in cities like Glasgow or Edinburgh.

However, if you want the full scenic, adrenaline-meets-nature experience, this Killiecrankie jump should definitely be on your list!

6. Mountain Biking

With rugged terrain, epic views, and trails for every skill level, Scotland is an absolute dream for mountain biking!

One of the top spots is Fort William, often called the UK’s outdoor capital. It’s home to the legendary downhill tracks at the Nevis Range Mountain Resort, which regularly host events from the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup.

While Fort William is famous for its intense downhill runs, there are also plenty of beginner and intermediate trails across Scotland, including purpose-built trail centers like Laggan Wolftrax or Glentress Forest.

So whether you’re looking for a challenging adrenaline rush or just a scenic ride with a few thrills along the way, Scotland absolutely has you covered!

For a fast-paced adventure with a beautiful view, ziplining and taking on high ropes challenges within Scotland’s forests will be hard to beat.

Top spots in the country include Killiecrankie, Loch Lomond, and Aviemore, where you’ll find courses set high among the trees with a mix of rope obstacles and long, high-speed zip lines. Some of the longest lines in Scotland stretch over 100–150 meters (328-492 feet)!

Many courses are designed for a range of abilities, so you can choose anything from a fun, slightly wobbly treetop adventure (great for families with kids!) to more adrenaline-focused and difficult ropes challenges with ziplines with bigger heights and faster speeds.

It’s the perfect mix of scenic and thrilling — especially if you want some adventure without throwing yourself off a cliff or down a raging river like some of the other options on this list.

8. Summit a Munro

If you’re up for a challenge, summiting a Munro is one of the most iconic outdoor adventures you can have in Scotland!

A Munro is any mountain over 3,000 feet (914 meters), and “Munro bagging” — climbing as many as you can — is basically a national pastime.

Whether you go all in during your trip or just tackle one or two, peaks like Ben Nevis (the UK’s highest!), Ben Lomond, or Cairn Gorm offer incredible routes and summit views.

Some Munros, like Ben Lomond, are considered more beginner-friendly, with clear paths and steady ascents, while others (including parts of Ben Nevis or more remote peaks) can be far more demanding and best suited for very experienced hikers.

No matter which you choose, just be sure to come prepared! Scotland’s weather is famously unpredictable, and conditions can change quickly. Pack waterproof layers, sturdy boots, navigation tools, and plenty of food and water.

9. Ridge Hiking

Summiting a Munro not quite enough for you? If you’re craving something in that same vein, but a bit more adventurous, ridge hiking (or ridge walking) sounds like it’ll be right up your alley!

Scotland is home to some seriously dramatic ridgelines, especially on the Isle of Skye. The famous Cuillin Ridge is one of the most challenging in the entire UK, with exposed scrambling, knife-edge sections, and routes best suited to experienced hikers (and often requiring a guide).

On the other end of the spectrum, though, the Quiraing offers a more accessible taste of ridge walking, with jaw-dropping views and just enough exposure to get your heart racing. Peep the pic above taken during our sunrise hike in September.

You’ll also find incredible ridge routes beyond Skye, like Aonach Eagach Ridge — often considered one of the narrowest and most thrilling in Scotland.

No matter where you go, expect some dramatic drop-offs, uneven terrain, and non-stop views!

10. Cave Exploring

While most adventures in Scotland take place high in the mountains or out on the water, the country also hides an incredible underground world that most travelers never even hear about!

Caving (also called spelunking in North America or potholing in the UK) takes you crawling, walking, and sometimes even abseiling through narrow tunnels, hidden chambers, and underground streams — offering a side of Scotland most visitors unfortunately miss.

Guided trips are by far the safest and easiest way to explore these environments, and instructors provide all the necessary equipment as well. With more than 3,000 known cave sites across the country, there are plenty of opportunities for all levels.

And if squeezing through cave passages isn’t quite your style, no worries! There are also boat tours that will let you explore Scotland’s dramatic sea caves from the water.

One of the best places for caving in Scotland is Assynt in the northern Highlands, home to the country’s longest cave, Uamh an Claonaite. Other notable spots include the limestone caves of Isle of Skye and Appin, the UK’ largest sea cave entrance at Smoo Cave, and the world-famous Fingal’s Cave.

11. Ice Climbing & Winter Mountaineering

If you thought Scotland was exciting in summer, just wait until winter transforms it into a full-on alpine playground!

Places like Glencoe and the Cairngorms National Park offer some of the best winter climbing in the UK, with frozen waterfalls, icy gullies, and snow-covered ridgelines that feel similar to the Alps — just a bit moodier (and often much windier).

Ice climbing and winter mountaineering typically involve using crampons and ice axes to move safely across the steep, frozen terrain. While that might sound intense, there are plenty of guided experiences (in fact, we highly suggest those vs. going on your own) where you’ll learn the basics in a controlled setting.

It’s challenging, cold, but incredibly rewarding and easily one of Scotland’s most unique adventures if you’re visiting in the colder months!

12. Sea Kayaking

Jumping back to some summertime activities, for a slower-paced, but still adventurous experience, sea kayaking is a great option to explore Scotland’s coastline!

The west coast is the place to be in this case, with top spots like Arisaig, Oban, Torridon, and the Isle of Skye offering calm waters, tons of hidden sea caves, and some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the country.

As you paddle along cliffs and quiet bays, keep an eye out for wildlife too — seals, dolphins, porpoises, and even sea eagles are all commonly spotted!

While it’s not quite as adrenaline-heavy as most of the other activities on this list, sea kayaking is still an exciting adventure, especially when navigating around rocky outcrops, into caves, and getting an animal sighting or two.

For the best experience, aim for a calm summer day when the water is more forgiving, the temps are a tiny bit warmer, and the views are at their very best.

13. Surfing & Windsurfing

Yes — you can surf in wild and windy Scotland and it’s every bit as fun as it sounds!

The north coast is the country’s surfing hotspot, with Thurso home to one of Europe’s best cold–water breaks. Expect powerful waves, dramatic cliffs, and conditions that can go from fun to massive adrenaline rush in no time.

Other great surf spots include Durness and Pease Bay, as well as Machrihanish and the Isle of Tiree over on the west coast.

For windsurfing, Scotland’s famously strong winds (and boy are they STRONG) make it an ideal playground.

The Moray Firth is a top location, along with areas around Loch Lomond and, yet again, the beautiful Isle of Tiree (which btw, is often called the “Hawaii of the North”!). The Isle of Tiree even hosts championships throughout the year!

Cold water, big swells, unexpected weather, and serious wind make surfing and windsurfing some of the most high-energy adventures in Scotland — just don’t forget a thick wetsuit!

14. Stand-Up Paddleboarding

For a more relaxed adventure and a great way to get out on the water, stand-up paddleboarding is a top option! Especially in Scotland’s scenic Highlands.

Top spots include Glencoe, Plockton, and Loch Lomond, where relatively calm lochs, beautiful mountain backdrops, and quiet shorelines make for an unforgettable paddle.

On still days, it’s peaceful and almost meditative… but add a bit of wind (which, as we all know, is more common than not in Scotland) or a passing boat wake, and things can get a bit wobbly (and a lot more exciting) very quickly. Plus your core will be on fire from all the balance work!

Still, we know. SUP isn’t quite as heart-pounding as the rest of the adventures on this list. We still think it’s worth an addition to any trip, as it’s an amazing way to experience Scotland — especially at sunrise or sunset, when the water is glassy and the landscapes feel even more magical than usual!

15. Off-Road 4×4 Riding

If you’re looking for a muddy, high–energy adventure, ATV riding is one of the most fun ways to explore Scotland’s rugged landscapes!

Matze and I personally love to explore a new country this way and we have done a quad tour in >80% of our trips together and not regretted a single one. We (clearly) cannot recommend it enough, haha!

The Scottish Highlands would be your top playground for this, with areas around Fort William, Aviemore, and Perthshire offering guided off-road experiences through forests, hills, and open terrain.

Expect creek crossings, steep climbs and descents, rocky paths, and plenty of deep mud — basically everything you would hope for when you picture this kind of adventure.

One of the best parts? This is a perfect rainy-day activity (which, let’s be honest, is very on-brand for Scotland).

16. Wild Swimming

For a refreshing (and slightly unhinged) adventure, wild swimming in Scotland is the choice for you.

Picture yourself plunging into icy pools beneath waterfalls like the famous Fairy Pools, swimming below the dramatic cascades of Steall Falls, or dipping into the plunge pools at Foyers Falls.

For something quieter, the remote lochs in Cairngorms National Park offer peaceful (yet still freezing) swims surrounded by mountains and total stillness.

Let’s be clear: this is not your average swim. The water is cold — like, really friggin’ cold — and cold-water shock will certainly get your heart pumping and give you that chased-after adrenaline rush. It’s an incredibly invigorating experience and one of the most memorable ways to connect with Scotland’s landscapes.

If you’re new to both wild swimming and Scotland, start with calm lochs rather than waterfalls or any flowing water, go with a buddy (never solo), and always check wind and weather conditions beforehand.

It’s one of those experiences you’ll either absolutely love… or you’ll question all your life choices and rue the day you trusted me enough to jump into Scotland’s icy waters (sorry…not sorry ).

17. Speedboating on Lochs

Our last activity on this list is another one that takes Scotland’s usually calm lochs and adds a bit of a twist: speedboating!

Hop into a high-speed RIB (rigid inflatable boat) and you’ll be flying across the water, bouncing over waves, getting soaked in spray, and holding on for dear life — all while surrounded by Scotland’s epic landscapes.

One of the most popular spots for this is Loch Ness, where tours often mix adrenaline with a bit of fun storytelling about the legendary Nessie

But it’s not just Loch Ness — you’ll find speedboat tours in places like Oban, Fort William, and even around the Isle of Skye, with some coastal routes offering the added bonus of wildlife spotting along the way.

Scotland is one of those places that wows you from the very moment you arrive with it’s misty glens, dramatic coastlines, ancient castles, cozy pubs, and some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.

Whether you’re dreaming of scenic hikes, incredible road-trip views, or historic cities, this country will hit it all and in the most wild and deeply welcoming way!

When my husband, Matze, and I visited for the first time in September 2025, we packed a lot into a seven-day road tripping adventure. (You can find our full route and more info on our Ultimate Scotland Road Trip Guide). To prep, I spent months researching beforehand — gathering tips from friends, travel forums, and fellow bloggers — and still, Scotland managed to surprise us!

So if you’re planning your own first trip, this guide is here to help you. These are our top Scotland travel tips and the 25 must-know things that every first-time visitor should understand before arriving in this “bonnie” country. From culture to logistics, transportation, weather, and everything in-between, so you can skip the learning curve and enjoy Scotland’s magic from day one!

1. The Weather Is Chaotic, but Wonderful

Scotland’s weather has one rule: expect anything.

Sunshine, rain, wind, and a stunning rainbow all within an hour? Totally normal.

The best strategy to stay comfy is layering. We suggest a proper waterproof jacket and pants (none of that ‘water resistant’ nonsense!), fleece layers, and waterproof shoes that can handle lots of water and mud (bonus points if you waterproof spray them like we did for an extra, extra safety layer, haha).

Also, if you’re road-tripping like we were, pack something (like a couple of old bags) to throw your muddy boots and layers in for during the drive!

Important to note is that rain doesn’t ruin the adventure. As we say in Germany whenever it rains, “we’re not made of sugar!”.

Ergo: you are not going to melt if you are out in the rain. You’ll be fine! Some of our best hikes (like Steall Waterfall) were almost empty thanks to the rain and it was more than worth it. Plus the rainbows alone are worth every soggy sock risk!

2. Summer ≠ Warm and Dry, so Pack Smart

Scotland’s summer never promises rain-free, sunny beach-weather. On average, it is actually the wettest season, so expect frequent rainy weather!

Luckily, most rainfalls are intense, but fairly brief spurts, followed by a bit of sunshine (which you can see up to 19 hours of in Northern Scotland in summer!!).

Summer high temps sit around 17–18 °C (about 63–64 °F), rarely getting above 25 °C (77 °F), and nighttime and early morning temps dip as low as 10–12 °C (50–54 °F). And when that frequent rain and wind are also present? It can feel much colder!

Yet another reason layering is your best friend. As mentioned above, bring a waterproof jacket and pants, good fleece / warm layers that are easy to take on and off, and sturdy, waterproof shoes or boots. A compact rain poncho (that won’t make you sweat like a proper jacket will!) is a great summer option too. Rain can come seemingly out of nowhere and one of our top Scotland travel tips is that you should be ready for anything.

In short: though you will likely get some beautifully sunny days, also plan for the clouds, drizzle, and chill in-between — just please don’t ever let that stop you from exploring! Proper gear will keep you comfy, dry, and ready to enjoy Scotland’s magic no matter the weather

3. Midges Are a Thing (Especially in Summer)

Midges are tiny biting flies similar to mosquitoes that can be maddeningly persistent. They’re worst on the west coast, islands, and Highlands, especially June through August, and at dawn and dusk on still, humid days.

Protection is simple and similar to mosquitoes : wear long sleeves and pants, choose light-colored and tightly woven fabrics (did you know that dark, bold color attracts them and mosquitoes!?), and perhaps even think about bringing a head net. Use a strong insect repellent, as well. We, of course, always suggest looking for eco-friendly options like this spray or this balm!

Another top tip is to plan outdoor activities for windier times or days — midges hate a breeze, so a blustery afternoon can be wonderfully midge-free. This is a bit more difficult to plan in advance, of course, but if you can remain adaptable and spontaneous, it can be a great help!

4. Driving Is the Best Way to See Scotland!

Renting your own car is hands-down the easiest and best way for first-timers to catch all of Scotland’s best stuff. If we could only impart one Scotland travel tip to you, it would be this!

It allows you to move at your own pace which means you can pull over at spontaneous viewpoints (of which there are oh so many), linger at castles and ruins, detour to tiny villages, hidden lochs, or hikes that buses simply can’t reach, and so much more.

The road trip itself is part of the show in Scotland: wide-open Highland roads, dramatic coastal drives, and picture-perfect valleys and munros (Scottish mountains) galore.

Yes, you might be driving on the opposite side of the road than you are used to and yes the roads can be stressful sometimes (more on that below), but it is absolutely, undeniably worth it.

Driving in Scotland was one of the top highlights of our trip. It was truly one of the most beautiful places we have ever been blessed enough to drive in.

5. Rural Roads Can Be Stressful

I know, I know. We just talked about how incredible a Scotland road trip is and how highly we recommend it… but it is also very important to share some rural road realities with you first, so you know what you’re getting into.

Single-track roads are just about everywhere in the Highlands and other rural parts of Scotland, but don’t worry too much. You’ll see passing places on the sides of the road constantly (truly, one every 30–60 seconds) so it’s quite easy to get around without much stress or delay. Just be sure to drive cautiously and be ready to pull into your nearest passing place if needed.

You’ll also share the road with some very lazy sheep, the occasional cow or bull, and many agonizingly slow tractors, buses, and campervans. Instead of stressing, take it as an excuse to pause and soak in those insanely scenic views! The animals will meander out of the way and the slow vehicles will eventually pull over or turn off.

For all the reasons above, we highly suggest sticking with the smallest car size you will need. Scottish back roads are indeed gorgeous, but they can test your nerves and the smaller the car, the smaller the stress!

6. Don’t Expect to Arrive Faster Than GPS Estimates!

Don’t assume you’ll be able to race between stops and cut down on any estimated times in Scotland. Seriously.

There are the aforementioned slow vehicles, animal crossings (even otters!!), single-track stretches, hairpin bends, narrow bridges, and heavily enforced speed limits all around.

So build in at least 50–100% extra time to be safe and ensure you never miss any planned excursions or check-ins! A 1.5 hour drive can often become 2–3 hours, especially on more popular routes where there is more traffic.

P.S – about those heavily enforced speed limits I mentioned? Speed traps are very present and most use average-speed checks between two points so you can’t trick or bypass them and you will get a ticket if you are caught speeding even a tiny bit!

7. Electric Rentals are Pushed and Might be a Good Option for You

Don’t be surprised if your rental company tries really hard to put you in an electric car. For some reason it is being pushed BIG time in Scotland right now.

The good news? Charging stations are almost everywhere — especially near major towns and along major routes. And with a little pre-planning, even rural adventures are totally doable!

We suggest using sites and apps like ChargePlace Scotland, Zapmap, or PlugShare to map out stations well in advance of each leg of your road trip.

That said, petrol cars are still absolutely an option — despite what some (very) pushy agents may claim. Some companies will even insist they’re suddenly “out of petrol cars” to nudge you toward an EV upgrade, so if you specifically want petrol, get written confirmation that your rental car will be petrol beforehand and stand your ground at pickup. Europcar tried to scam us big time in this regard on our last visit to Scotland!

P.S – In case you were wondering, we chose petrol this last road trip because we spent a lot of time in rural areas and didn’t want charging stress. Fuel was surprisingly affordable (coming from Germany, at least!), and the mileage for our rental car was fantastic. Either choice works — the key is picking the one that fits your travel style and plans for that specific trip!

8. Public Transport Works… But It’s Limited in Rural Spots

Public transportation in Scotland is excellent around cities. It’s fast, cheap, and the drivers are extremely helpful and friendly! We loved using it in Edinburgh and Glasgow where we parked outside the cities and rode in via bus.

In general, trains and long distance buses can be wonderful for major routes (Inverness–Edinburgh–Glasgow–Fort William, etc) and more popular towns and attractions.

However, once you venture into the Highlands, islands, tiny villages, or to any ‘hidden gem’ attractions, schedules thin out, if there are even any services available at all!

Be sure you research your desired route beforehand to help decide if it is both doable without a rental car and, most importantly, enjoyable!

9. Book Everything Early — Seriously

Scotland can get very busy and “I’ll book later” usually turns into “oops, it’s all sold out.”

Peak season (June–August) is particularly frenzied: car rentals, popular accommodation, activities, guided hikes and tours can all get booked as early as months in advance.

Aim to ideally lock in rentals, accommodations, and top tours at least 2–3 months ahead for shoulder season, and 3–6 months for peak season or weekends around festivals and holidays.

Not only will this secure your spot, but it also allows you to hunt down the best deals, compare options, and snag discounts before prices spike. A little advance planning truly goes a long way here!

10. Scotland Is Bigger Than You Think

Scotland may look tiny on a map, but it’s deceptively vast and quite spread out!

Trying to “see it all” in one trip, especially a short trip, can lead to a lot of time in the car and very little time actually soaking it in.

We suggest picking just a few regions per trip (check out our top road trip routes and tips here), ensuring you build realistic drive times into your plan (see #6 above), and saving other areas for future visits — you’ll enjoy each place so much more when you’re not rushing.

11. Expect Higher Costs Than You Might Think

Scotland is undeniably stunning… but surprisingly pricey.

First-timers (read: Matze and I, lol) might be shocked by how quickly costs add up, especially for accommodation — which will likely eat the biggest part of your budget. Activities and food follow close behind!

But while Scotland certainly isn’t “budget-backpacker cheap,” you can absolutely explore it comfortably without overspending. The best tip to save money? Book early (peep #9 above).

Beyond that, consider the Scotland travel tips for budgeting: try a mix of nicer accommodation with more budget-friendly options like hostels or guesthouses, cook some meals at home or grab bakery lunches instead of eating out every time, and prioritize free or low-cost activities — which Scotland luckily has tons of, especially hikes, viewpoints, beaches, and waterfalls!

When it comes to splurging, choose the things that genuinely elevate your trip: a comfortable rental car (you’ll spend a lot of time in it if you’re road tripping), a couple of unique activities (we highly suggest coasteering!), or that cozy accommodation with a killer view you’ve been eyeing for a while.

With a thoughtful balance of saving and strategic splurging, you can definitely enjoy all of Scotland’s magic without totally blowing your budget.

12. You Don’t Usually Need Cash, but Have Some on Hand

Scotland is extremely card-friendly and both credit & debit cards are accepted in almost all shops, cafés, buses, trains, and restaurants — especially in cities and tourist hubs.

However, in very rural areas or islands and in small markets, ferries, or pubs, cash is king. You will also likely need to use cash for any honesty boxes, tour guide tips, and extra small transactions.

Our top tip: withdraw some cash (GBP – Great British Pound) from ATMs in larger towns before heading into more remote areas, or just convert a chunk of cash before your trip. ATMs can be sparse in rural areas, so it’s best to plan ahead.

13. Tipping Culture Is Low-Key

This likely comes as no surprise at all, but tipping in Scotland is not like in the USA at all. It is very relaxed and it is never expected or mandatory, but it is becoming more common.

Restaurants will sometimes automatically add a service charge (check the bill); if there isn’t one, 10% for good service is a great guideline (15% if you’re feeling extra generous). For casual pubs, cafés, or counter service, tipping isn’t expected, but we sometimes like to round up and/or leave our loose change!

Other quick rules (remember: it’s always optional): taxis — round up or tip about 10%; hotel porters — £1–£2 per bag; housekeeping — £1–£2 per night if you really want to say thanks; tour guides — £2–£5 per person (or ~10% for longer/private tours). If paying by card, some places let you add a tip on the terminal, but cash is always easy and appreciated in smaller places.

Bottom line: tip for good service, but don’t feel obligated to tip in every situation. It’s a friendly, low-pressure culture!

14. Breakfast is a Big Deal and Portions are HEARTY!

Scottish breakfasts are no joke and it is basically a traveler’s dream: hearty, protein-packed, and filling enough to keep you satisfied until late afternoon.

The most common breakfast, a traditional “Full Scottish“, usually includes eggs, bacon, sausage and/or haggis, black pudding (blood sausage), tattie scones (potato pancakes), baked beans, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, and toast. It’s very similar to a Full English, but with a local twist!

And if you’re by the coast? Don’t miss Scotland’s seafood breakfasts. You’ll often find smoked salmon, Eggs Benedict with local fish, or even salmon breakfast muffins amongst the rest of the usual hearty breakfast options (usually including vegetarian options as well!).

In short: come hungry. Scotland takes breakfast seriously!

15. “Loch” = Lake and You’ll See a LOT (P.S Loch Ness Isn’t the Best!)

First things first: “loch” is pronounced like lokh (IPA: /lɒx/) — with that lovely Scottish throat sound at the end. You’ll see the word everywhere because Scotland is absolutely packed with lochs, each with its own vibe depending on the region: dramatic sea lochs on the west coast, mirror-calm freshwater lochs in the Highlands, and tiny hidden ones tucked all in-between.

Of course, Loch Ness is the local celebrity, and rightfully so… but here’s the truth: it’s not the prettiest loch in Scotland and not our top recommendation. Iconic? Absolutely. Scenic? Sure.

But spots like Loch Lomond, Loch Shiel, Loch Maree, or Loch Katrine will steal the show every time. They are generally more private, offer the most incredible views at the shore or from nearby hikes, and have stunning landscapes and scenery (truly, jaw dropping!).

Still, if it’s your first trip, Nessie’s home is worth a quick stop for the lore alone — just don’t feel bad if you can’t squeeze it in. There are hundreds of breathtaking lochs that you can visit instead, especially if your focus is more on beauty, privacy, and nature!

16. Scots and Gaelic Are the National Languages (and Different!)

If you’re a language nerd (hello, same ), Scotland is an absolute treat for the ears. English is spoken everywhere and by far the most common language, but you do get two very special additions in this country!

The three national languages of Scotland are English, Scottish Gaelic, and Scots.

Gaelic (pronounced gah-lik (IPA: /ˈgɑːlɪk/) in Scotland) is a Goidelic Celtic language, related to Irish, spoken most often in the Outer Hebrides (Western Isles), the Highlands, and Islands. You’ll spot it on road signs, hear it on local radios, and see it woven into many place names.

Scots, on the other hand, is a West Germanic language closely related to English — think of it as a sister language with its own spelling, grammar, and fun words like wee (little), bairn (child), and bonnie (beautiful). You’ll hear Scots most often in the Lowlands and in everyday speech from pubs, the radio, conversations on the street, etc.

17. Castles Are Everywhere

Scotland is stacked with castles — over 1,500, depending on how you count them. So whether you love history, photography, or just exploring atmospheric places, there’s a castle in Scotland for you!

The main types you’ll come across are ruined medieval fortresses, royal palaces, and tower houses (sturdy, vertical homes built for defense).

If it’s your first visit, you truly can’t go wrong, but a few castles do stand out as must-sees:

• Edinburgh Castle — iconic, perched on an extinct volcano, and full of Scottish history
• Stirling Castle — one of the most important royal residences and stunningly preserved
• Eilean Donan — the postcard-perfect castle surrounded by a loch (lake) and mountains
• Urquhart Castle — dramatic ruins right on Loch Ness
• Dunnottar Castle — jaw-dropping clifftop fortress with stunning ocean views
• Doune Castle — a filming favorite (Outlander, Monty Python, Game of Thrones, etc.!)
• Kilchurn Castle — haunting, moody, and extremely photogenic

We could keep going, but these are some of the best of the best and would keep any group quite busy and happy on a first trip!

18. History Is Woven Into EVERYTHING!

While on the topic of history, boy is Scotland’s history everywhere. From Jacobite uprisings and rebellions to centuries-old clans with incredibly rich culture, battlefields all over this tiny country, and so much more.

This deep heritage has shaped the landscapes, castles, and villages you’ll explore. And with a bit of research before your trip, or just a fun guided tour, you can really make every stop come alive!

These top museums will also help bring history to life:

• National Museum of Scotland (Edinburgh) — everything from prehistoric artifacts to modern Scottish life
• Culloden Visitor Centre (near Inverness) — detailed look at the Jacobite uprising and battlefield
• Scottish National War Museum (Edinburgh Castle) — military history through the centuries
• The Battle of Bannockburn Experience (Stirling) — interactive history with epic battlefield context
• Museum of the Isles (Skye) — clan history, folklore, and local Isle of Skye heritage

Even if you don’t hit every museum (or any), learning a bit about the clans, rebellions, and battles of Scotland will add a ton of depth to your trip and we cannot recommend it enough!

19. The Right to Roam (Wild Camping, Anyone?)

Scotland has one of the most generous access laws in the world: the Right to Roam! This gives you the right to explore just about any open land for “recreational” or “educational” purposes, whether that’s running, cycling, hiking, walking, or even wild camping!

For travelers, this is a dream come true, with endless trails, lochs, glens, and hills waiting to be discovered and the option of wild camping in such stunning places is not only an incredible experience, but also an amazing budget booster (accommodation is pricey in Scotland!).

That said, freedom always comes with responsibility.

Follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code: close gates behind you, take your litter with you, respect farmer’s lands and avoid disturbing livestock, stick to paths where possible, respect the environment and wildlife, and always leave no trace – especially if you are wild camping (more on Scotland’s camping etiquette here).

Do these simple things, though, and you can safely roam, hike, camp, and wander in Scotland without worry!

20. Hiking Is World-Class

Scotland is a hiker’s paradise, not only because of the Right to Roam we just talked about, but because this country boasts jaw-dropping landscapes left, right, and center.

From easier hikes and walks like the Steall Waterfall Trail (in Glen Nevis) or Calton Hill (in Edinburgh) to serious climbs and multi-day hikes like Ben Nevis (in Glen Nevis) or the Cuillin Ridge (in Skye), there’s something for every level — and every one offers the most unforgettable views.

Safety first, though: check the weather before heading out (and always prep for rain regardless), tell someone your route, and bring a map or GPS. Summits can be extremely windy, wet, and cold, even in summer, so layering is essential — waterproof jackets, fleeces, and proper shoes are non-negotiable.

In other words: pack the rain jacket, lace up your boots, and get ready for a ton of seriously incredible views!

21. Don’t Rely on Phone Service!

In much of Scotland, especially the Highlands, islands, and remote hiking areas, cell service can be patchy or flat out non-existent!

It all depends on your provider, but relying solely on your phone service for directions, entertainment, attraction info, and more is risky — so come prepared.

Check with your provider about the areas covered and see if you can get Scotland-specific info. If you don’t have an international plan or it just doesn’t offer good coverage, look into getting an e-sim with better coverage (like Yesim) just for this trip.

Regardless of your coverage, we still suggest downloading offline maps (Google Maps or Waze can work great for offline use), as well as any hiking guides, trails, or walking routes you plan to tackle. Save offline playlists, podcasts, audiobooks, and any other entertainment, along with any critical info in advance too.

And honestly, when you’re standing on a windswept cliff, halfway up a Highland trail, or exploring ancient ruins, you probably won’t miss the signal anyway. No signal, no stress!

22. Expect Extremely Friendly Locals (& Cheeky Banter)

Scots are famously friendly! Traveling in Scotland can feel a bit like visiting family you haven’t met yet — warm, welcoming, and always ready with a joke or a story.

So if you ever need help, simply ask — most locals are more than happy to point you in the right direction or share their favorite hidden gems. Scotland truly has some of the kindest people Matze and I have ever met!

Scots also have their wonderfully cheeky sense of humor. Someone might crack a dry joke, tease you a little, or deliver a sarcastic comment with a perfectly straight face — it’s all meant in good fun!

And fair warning: the accent can be strong, especially in smaller towns and rural areas. Watching a few Scottish shows or movies or listening to a Scottish podcast or radio show before your trip will help train your ear much more than you’d think.

23. Expect Early Closing Times

If you’re coming from a big city, especially one in the US where 24/7 shops are fairly common, Scotland may feel like it closes shockingly early.

Many shops, cafés, and attractions in smaller towns shut by 5-6 p.m. (at the latest), and even in larger cities, 7–8 p.m. closures aren’t unusual at all. So always check opening hours ahead of time, especially for museums, distilleries, bakeries, cafés – even parks!

We were shocked to see that the Princess Street Gardens in Edinburgh closed at 6 p.m. when we visited!! We only had one full day in Edinburgh and when we arrived at the gardens at 5:45, the guards (yes, they had guards posted at all entrances for closing!) would not let us in. The only view I got of the Ross Fountain, which I was so excited to see, was through the bushes (laughing, but also crying about this to this day). We didn’t realize the park would close at all, let alone so early.

Don’t be like us – research those hours beforehand! This ensures you don’t arrive somewhere only to find the doors closed and your plans for the rest of the day ruined. It also gives you a perfect excuse to frontend all your sightseeing and then slow down and enjoy a sunset walk, a pint in a cozy pub, or a scenic drive to fully relax at the end of the day.

24. Sundays Can Be Quiet (Especially in Rural Areas)

In Scotland, particularly in rural regions and on the islands, Sundays are traditionally quieter.

You’ll find that many shops, cafés, and even some attractions have even shorter hours on Sunday than those we just talked about above and that is if they don’t close entirely! This is yet another reason why it is smart and often necessary to plan ahead for meals, groceries, and sightseeing.

If you’re visiting a smaller town, check hours for cafés, restaurants, and supermarkets on Sunday or just stock up on essentials beforehand. For museum visits, markets, and other attractions visit during weekdays or just double check Sunday hours to be sure you don’t miss out on anything!

As seen by this point and the last, a little planning goes a long way in Scotland — unless you enjoy the adventure of hunting for the one café in town that’s actually open

25. Plan Less, Experience More!

As I am sure you have realized by now, Scotland is the perfect country for slow travel!

While it’s tempting to try to tick off every castle, loch, and viewpoint in one trip, it just isn’t possible and some of the most magical moments happen when you leave room for the unexpected. The scenery alone demands you pause, pull over, and simply take it in!

During our road trip, we found ourselves constantly pulling over for spontaneous adventures: a herd of Highland cows grazing by the roadside (pic above!), a hidden waterfall tucked behind a hill, a cozy looking café, or a small castle we hadn’t planned to see. These unplanned stops often turned out to be some of our favorite memories and moments we’d never have experienced if we were strictly sticking to an itinerary.

Embracing this slower pace also reduces stress. Instead of rushing from place to place on those very slow Scottish roads, you can soak in the atmosphere, chat with locals, or simply enjoy some quiet moments outdoors.

This is a country that loves to surprise you, so always factor in extra time for detours, hikes, photo ops, sporadic weather, and any other last-minute changes. Scotland rewards curiosity and flexibility!

Bonus: Did You Know the National Animal of Scotland is a Unicorn!?

Yes, you read that right and no, we’re not joking. Scotland’s national animal is a unicorn

This mythical creature has been a symbol of purity, strength, power, and independence in Scottish heraldry for centuries. It is said to sum up the untameable spirit of the country.

Basically, Scotland said, “Why be normal when you can be mythical and powerful?” and I am 100% here for it, haha.

You’ll see unicorns all over once you know to look: on the royal coat of arms, in souvenirs, on castle facades and other landmarks, in shop and hotel decor, and more. So keep an eye out — spotting a unicorn is just one of the many fun things that makes Scotland so unique!

Top 8 Tips for Visiting Munich Christmas Markets

After countless mugs of Kinderpunsch (mulled wine’s alcohol-free sibling – my go-to drink!) and many frozen fingers and toes later, here are our top local-approved tips for visiting a Munich Christmas market (AKA a Christkindlmarkt, as we say here in Bavaria):

1⃣ Visit Midweek or Early in the Day – Markets are certainly magical at night, but they get extremely crowded fast. Visit during the day, find your fav, and then visit just that one at night for the full day and night experience!

2⃣ Bring Cash – Most stalls will only accept cash and you’ll want to bring plenty with you to avoid the expensive ATMs near market entrances.

3⃣ Layer up – You’ll be cold standing in line and then get hot in midst of the crowds or in huts, so lots of layers are key. This cannot be said enough! A warm hat, gloves, and good, grippy shoes (it’s icy!) are also essentials.

4⃣ Learn a few German phrases – A surefire way to make locals smile! Here are some top phrases:
– Good Day → Guten Tag
– Thank you → Dankeschön or Vielen Dank
– Please → Bitteschön
– Have a nice day / have a nice evening → Schönen Tag / Schönen Abend

5⃣ Try a new-to-you local treat at each market — From homemade Bavarian honey to handmade Lebkuchen (similar to gingerbread cookies) and so much more, each market has something unique! Expand your palate by picking something new at each one.

6⃣ Drink deposits = fun souvenirs – You’ll pay a ‘Pfand’ (€2–5) with the price of your drink — a refundable deposit to cover the mug. Return the mug intact to get your money back, or simply keep it as a souvenir (you’ve already paid for it, so no guilt in packing it away in your bag ).

7⃣ Bring reusable bags – Speaking of bags, between mugs, ornaments, handmade gifts, and snacks, your hands fill up fast! Many vendors won’t have bags for you and most locals just bring foldable bags (like these) from home. If you need some last minute, try DM or Rossmann stores here. Set in colorful circus tents, it stands out amongst the slew of more traditional markets with it’s colorful lights, live performances (from acrobatics to bands and more), quirky art stalls, and delicious food and drinks.

This market is ideal for those who love fairy tales and a dash of the unexpected: think fire dancers, live music, a giant fire pit, and handmade crafts you won’t find anywhere else. It’s festive, fun, and full of personality!

Haidhausen Market

Blutenburg Castle Market

Location: Blutenburg Castle, Seldweg 15,m81247

This underrated gem in Sendling-Westpark offers tons of local Bavarian flavors and spirit. You’ll find everything from handmade crafts to regional food stalls, plus the largest Christmas Pyramid (a rotating, tiered nativity scene) in Bavaria at 50ft / 15 meters and even an ice rink!

It’s perfect for those wanting a traditional Christmas market with a community vibe — especially one tucked a bit further away from all the city buzz. Plus, after a brief Christmas break, this market keeps going nearly a full week into January as Winterdorf unterm Maibaum – a winter village!

Chinesischer Turm Market

Located in Munich’s famous English Garden (the city’s version of Grand Central Park), this market has a more laid-back, rustic, and nature-adjacent feel. Locals come to enjoy a mug of Glühwein under the iconic “Chinese Tower” (see pic above) and for a curling match on the market’s famous Eisstockbahnen (curling lanes) – available for group reservations!

It’s ideal to combine with a relaxed winter stroll through the park — especially pretty after a light snowfall when everything sparkles and feels calm and cozy.

Day Trip: WDL Burgfest

Location: Wort des Lebens, Nördliche Seestraße 130, 82541 Münsing
Public transport stop: This one is a bit tricky to get to with the public transport, hence why we labeled it a day trip, but it is possible! Take the S6 subway to Starnberg Nord (note the Nord! There are 2 stops!) and then take the 961 bus to Allmanshausen. From there, you will walk 15-20 minutes straight through the village and down the winding forest roads to reach the lake – the castle is on the left! There will be plenty of crowds to follow and staff from WDL to guide you. Just be sure to note bus times, as they can change and the last bus of the day is often earlier than you’d expect! Via car it is roughly 45 mins driving from Munich.
Dates: Only the first advent weekend! November 29th – November 30th, 2025 | Sat: 12:00-20:00(8pm), Sun: 12:00-18:00 (6pm)

Another short–lived market, this one is typically held just during the first advent weekend! Taking place at Wort des Lebens (Word of Life) Starnberg, a christian organization and camp set in a medieval ‘Burg’ (castle) overlooking the famous Lake Starnberg, this cozy Christmas market feels infinitely more magical and intimate than most other markets.

Think rustic wooden huts with handcrafted goods and locally caught and sourced foods (including, if you’re lucky, wild boar burgers from a local hunter!), medieval costume, castle tours, lakeside views (with some of the best winter walks and sunsets around), fun events, and a big focus on things to do for kids.

It’s one of the most atmospheric and photographic tiny markets around Munich. It is small, extremely community-driven, very family-friendly, and just breathtaking at sunset with the alps visible across the lake on a clear day.

Day Trip: Bad Tölzer Christkindlmarkt

Location: Marktstraße, 83646 Bad Tölz
Public transport stop: For this one, you will need to either book a taxi (but this will be pricey!), use your own rented car, or book a regional train ticket (here – Munich to Bad Tölz) – there are no Munich public transit options. It roughly 1.5 hours from Munich.

This one’s perfect for anyone wanting a Hallmark–style holiday escape without straying too far from the city and without the crazy crowds in other top markets a days drive from Munich like Nuremberg or Salzburg.

All the shops and houses are the traditional types you think of when you picture a classic, old-world European village and that, combined with the river running through the town and the alps in the distance? Chefs kiss. A top choice for any Christmas market visitors!

Must Try Food and Drink at Christmas Markets

One of the best parts of visiting Munich Christmas markets, at least for me, is the food — seriously, come hungry!

From sizzling sausages to sweet roasted almonds, every corner is filled with the scent of meat, fresh bread, cinnamon, roasted nuts, and spiced wine.

Below is a list of all the traditional German Christmas market foods. Whether you’re after hearty Bavarian comfort food or sweet festive treats, these holiday specialties are the perfect way to quite literally taste the magic of Munich’s Christmas season!

Glühwein – The classic steaming hot, spiced red wine (AKA mulled wine) that’s basically Christmas in a cup. Smells like heaven!

Kinderpunsch – A non-alcoholic twist on Glühwein, made with various fruit juices and the same festive spices. My personal favorite!

Feuerzangenbowle – A very dramatic version of mulled wine where a rum-soaked sugar loaf is set on fire before your eyes and drips it’s caramelized sweetness on a mini grate into your cup of mulled wine.

Käsespätzle – Think of it as Germany’s take on mac and cheese: buttery egg noodles smothered in Bavarian cheese and topped with crispy onions. Comfort food heaven – I could never, ever live without it!!

Currywurst – A beloved German street food made of sliced sausage slathered in a spiced ketchup-curry sauce. Messy and a bit weird? Maybe. Delicious? Definitely.
P.S – looking for other wurst (sausage) to try? Nuremberg (small guys, usually in sets of 3), Bratwurst (big boys, sometimes comically big!), or Weißwurst (Bavaria’s speciality – a white sausage) are the most commonly seen, classic choices.

Fischsemmel – A beloved Bavarian sandwich: fresh fish (often herring or mackerel) in a crusty bun, usually topped with onions and pickles.
P.S – not a fan of fish? Here are two other popular options: Wurst (sausage) or Leberkäse (a meatloaf type of patty – “liver cheese” translated in English, though it actually contains neither!).

Gebrannte Mandeln – Roasted, caramelized almonds that fill the air for miles with the most irresistible sweet scent. You can find many other nut varieties too!

Lebkuchenherzen – Heart-shaped gingerbread cookies with sweet sayings written in icing. They also make adorable (and long-lasting) souvenirs – in fact most Germans tend to display the hearts rather than eat them! (A better option for eating is Lebkuchen cookies or cake)

Crêpes – Certainly not German, but definitely a German market favorite. You’ll find both sweet and savory options — from Nutella and bananas to ham and cheese.

Easily one of the best things to do in Quepos and Manuel Antonio – reall in all of Costa Rica. If you can only squeeze in one tour during your trip, a night tour is one of the best options. You won’t regret it!

Exploring the region after the sun sets is such a thrilling, educational, and memorable experience. The staggering amount of wildlife you’ll encounter after dark is truly shocking!

Most tours are a handful of hours and allow you to cruise through rugged landscapes, private off-road tracks, muddy riverbeds, and more – all while visiting stunning points of interest along!

You can choose to ride solo or share a quad with a partner/friend. Some tours even offer UTVs (Buggies/Side-by-Sides) which are great for groups and drivers wanting a bit more security.

No experience? No problem. Friendly guides will teach you everything you need to know and make sure your ride is both safe and exhilarating. Note that if you do have experience, you tend to ride (in a group tour, that is) only as fast as the slowest rider. So if you are looking for something high-energy and fast, book a private tour instead!

Matthias and I took this ATV group tour in Quepos/Manuel Antonio, where we rode through palm plantations, crossed rivers, raced through muddy and rocky roads, and swam at the base of a waterfall during a break.

We each had our own quad and wished desperately that we could race, but alas, it was a bit on the slow side for us. That said, we still managed to get up to 60+ km/h a few times and even did some light drifting – SO much fun!

Due to it’s location near both land and sea and the roots providing both home and protection, mangroves are just brimming with wildlife. And one of the best spots in all of Costa Rica? Damas Island, near Quepos and Manuel Antonio!

That mangrove forest is home to white-faced monkeys, anteaters, boa snakes, iguanas, exotic birds, a plethora of crabs, and so much more!

Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity isn’t just on land – its oceans, lakes, and rivers are teeming with incredible marine life, making Costa Rica a world-class fishing destination!

The country is especially famous for big game fishing, with the chance to catch sailfish (like the one Matthias caught – and released – in the pic above), marlin, tuna, mahi-mahi, and more.

The best option to ensure you get the best catch is to go with a guide – whether that be going all out with a full-day deep–sea charter, opting for a half-day shared tour (like we did), or trying to find a budget–friendly trip with a local fisherman.

We personally went with Quepos Fish Adventure, and while it was a bit pricey, it was a great choice.

While on the tour, be sure to keep your eyes peeled not just for fish, as you’ll likely see tons of sea turtles (they look like floating driftwood or rocks!), dolphins, and more – perhaps even breaching whales, like we did!

The best part of a fishing tour in this region? If you catch a fish you are allowed to keep, many restaurants along the coastline will cook it up for you right then and there! Freshest. Meal. Ever.

07.) Whale & Dolphin Watching Tours

Whale and dolphin watching in Costa Rica is amazing year-round!

Depending on when exactly you head to Costa Rica, you might be in the season for spotting humpback whales, orcas, spinner dolphins, and more.

No matter when you visit, though, the waters are teeming with all types of marine life so you’re bound to see something incredible!

The best rated tour in the area, and the best spot to whale watch in this entire region, is in Uvita which is a ~45 minute drive from Quepos.

Another one of the top things to do in Quepos and Manuel Antonio for nature lovers is to go on a horseback riding tour.

Many tours take place on private land, meaning it’s just you, your small group, and untouched nature all around. The mix of rainforest and beach in this region creates a truly memorable tour!

09.) Waterfall Tours

As you have probably seen, there is no shortage of waterfalls all over Costa Rica and, as such, no shortage of waterfall tours!

In fact, one of the most famous and beloved waterfalls to visit, Nauyaca Waterfalls, is just south of the region of Quepos and Manuel Antonio.

We talked a bit about this waterfall above (under ‘Day Tours’), but to summarize: this is a massive 61 meter (200 foot) tall waterfall with multiple swimming holes that is located in a stunning canyon within the rainforest.

While you can hike to this waterfall on your own (you just need to pay the entrance fee), guided tours offer expert insights, help with wildlife spotting, provide local tips, and offer hassle-free transportation – often with a warm meal and/or fresh fruit along the way (Costa Rican fruit, especially pineapple, is next-level!).

Tours almost always include the entrance fee for the falls in the tour price, as well!

10.) White-water Rafting Tours

One of the most adrenaline-filled things to do in Quepos and Manuel Antonio is to go white-water rafting!

Costa Rica is ranked among the best rafting destinations in the world, with options for all skill levels.

The most famous spot in Costa Rica, the Pacuare River (where Matze and I went!), is on the Caribbean side in the far south, however near Quepos and Manual Antonio you’ll find two other, excellent choices: the Savegre River, perfect for beginners and families with fun class II–III rapids, and the Naranjo River, which offers class III-IV adventures.

Depending on the season and rainfall, these tours can be a wild, splash-filled ride, but it is always worth it! Expect beautiful scenery, tons of wildlife sightings, and plenty of excitement.

This is an activity that cannot be missed! Costa Rica’s crystal-clear waters and insane biodiversity make for some of the best snorkeling in the world.

Out of all of the things Matze and I have managed to stuff into our explorations of Costa Rica, going on a snorkeling tour has always been one of our favorites and is, in our opinion, certainly one of the most memorable things to do in the entire country!

On a simple 2-hour tour, you will likely spot tons of marine creatures, depending on when exactly you visit (December to March is peak snorkeling time in Quepos)! From curious pufferfish, to gentle nurse sharks, incredibly colorful schools of fish, giant sea turtles, and so much more.

Snorkeling Manuel Antonio is the best and highest rated company in the region and they have both boat tours and kayaking tours available.

Pro tip: tours do have disinfected snorkeling gear available (typically one-size and low to normal quality), but we suggest buying your own to have a perfect fit, high quality, an easy tour, and complete freedom to snorkel outside of the tour whenever you want!

Is there a more epic place to go ziplining than Costa Rica’s lush rainforests?

I think it is a given by now that there is endless untamed, beautiful nature to be found in Costa Rica. Quepos and Manuel Antonio are no exception!

From one of the top national parks in the country to a long list of water sport options and so much more more – there are many things to do in Quepos and Manuel Antonio for all of us nature lovers.

18.) National Parks

Did you know that more than 25% of the land in Costa Rica is devoted national park space?! So it is no wonder that no matter what city you visit, you are sure to be just a stone’s throw away from a stunning national park.

Here’s a quick rundown of all the top parks in the Quepos and Manuel Antonio region:

• Manuel Antonio National Park – One of Costa Rica’s most famous parks! It offers beautiful beaches, lush rainforest, and abundant wildlife all in a single space. You’ll find a few great beaches, easy hiking trails, and tons of animals, such as sloths, monkeys, iguanas, deer, crabs, tropical birds, and more. Just note that this park is usually quite busy – no matter the time of year you go!

• Marino Ballena National Park – Located just south of Quepos and Manuel Antonio in Uvita, this park is special for it’s beautiful beaches, extensive coral reef, rainforest trails, and the famous “whale tail” sandbar pictured above! It’s a hotspot for snorkeling, marine wildlife (especially humpback whales during migration!), and fun beach days.

• Damas Island Estuary & Mangrove – Very close to Manuel Antonio, this unique mangrove landscape (talked about at #1 and #5 above!) is great for serene wildlife viewing. You’ll likely see white-faced capuchin monkeys, sloths, iguanas, caimans, and many bird species and there tend to be less crowds than in other parks.

• Rainmaker Conservation Project – Just a short drive from Quepos, Rainmaker is an awesome choice for its hanging bridges, scenic waterfall pools, and incredibly lush rainforest trails. It tends to be much quieter than Manuel Antonio, so it’s ideal if you want nature, hiking, and swimming in a slightly more private setting. It will give you the rainforest and wildlife immersion without all the beach crowds!

Pro Tip: Want to spot tons of wildlife? Keep an eye out for fruiting wild avocado trees – they’re one of the top food sources across many species in Costa Rica. And don’t forget your binoculars! Even on a guided tour with shared binoculars, having your own ensures you’ll never miss an epic sighting due to waiting in line.

19.) Wildlife Refuges

It should come as no surprise that with so much biodiversity and so much emphasis on preserving the wild nature of Costa Rica, that animal rescue and rehabilitation is also a very high priority in this country!

There is just one, official wildlife refuge in the region of Quepos and Manuel Antonio: Kids Saving the Rainforest Wildlife Rescue!

Located in Manuel Antonio, this wildlife rescue center offers 1.5 hour tours where you can directly support their efforts while checking out and learning about rescued animals like sloths, spider monkeys, parrots, kinkajous, and more.

20.) Si como No’s Butterfly Garden

Did you know that Costa Rica is home to around 1,250 butterfly species – over 10% of the world’s total!?

It should come as no surprise then, that there are tons of butterfly exhibits, conservatories, and atrium’s all over the country!

In Quepos, the Si Como No Resort and Wildlife Refuge has a beautiful butterfly botanical garden, along with a crocodile lagoon for you to explore! Placed across the street to the resort, this spot is free for guests of the resort, but you can just pay the small fee to enter if you are not a resort guest.

Here, you’ll be able to see and learn about a variety of the area’s flora and fauna, including the eye-catching Blue Morpho and several other tropical butterfly species. The Crocodile Lagoon offers peeks at crocodiles, caimans, and turtles!

21.) Water Sports (Surfing, Kayaking, and More!)

If you love being in or near the ocean, you’re in for a treat – water sports are some of the most easy and varied things to do in Quepos and Manuel Antonio!

This vibrant coastal region offers it all: relaxing beach days, kayaking through wildlife-rich mangroves, surfing powerful waves, snorkeling coral reefs, and so much more.

For most beach fun, you can usually rent gear right on the beach. Surfboards are particularly easy to find last-minute at most beaches – just take a stroll, check out a few stands, compare prices, and please don’t be afraid to barter!

For snorkeling, we suggest either a tour (see #13 above) or purchasing your own gear / bringing it from home and taking it with you to the beaches you visit.

For the Damas mangroves you must book a tour if you want to visit, due to the delicate ecosystem. They have boat and kayaking tours (even nighttime boating tours!) that are all led by a knowledgeable guide who’ll chat about the unique mangroves and point out wildlife to you along the way (see #5 above for more detail).

And of course, for pure relaxation, the beaches are plentiful! Whether you’re in the water, sunbathing, or just exploring the coastline, you will be greeted with warm sunshine, stunning views, and refreshing salt water.

22.) Beach Hopping

When it comes to beaches, Quepos and Manuel Antonio certainly have no lack! From wild and remote to lively and social, the beaches in this region offer something for every kind of traveler.

Here is an overview of ALL of the beaches in Quepos and Manuel Antonio, as well as nearby in Uvita:

• Playa Espadilla Norte – Espadilla beach is split into the north and the south sections and this side, the north (Norte) is a long, wide public beach with dark sand and tropical foliage. It’s very accessible and has lots of ammenities nearby (restaurants, shops, rentals etc). Great for sunbathing, beginner surfing, and people who want beach time plus convenience.

• Playa Espadilla Sur – The south part of Espadilla is located inside Manuel Antonio Park (so it does cost $ to reach). This beach has softer sand, calmer swimming (at least in parts), and easy access to restrooms and other amenities within the park. Best for families, snorkelers, and people wanting a scenic beach combined with wildlife viewing within the park.

• Playa Manuel Antonio – This is one of the most picturesque and beloved beaches in the region, located in a deep protected bay inside Manuel Antonio Park. Gentle currents make it good for swimming and snorkeling and it can be quite shady so it is a great choice for full-day beach relaxing.

• Playa Gemelas – A small beach that is also inside Manuel Antonio Park. More secluded (so a bit less crowded!) due to the hike to reach it, and therefore great for a more peaceful time at the beach, compared to the other beaches, especially during the week.

• Playa Biesanz – A tucked-away, hidden-gem of a beach that is accessible by a gravel trail near Parador Resort in the town of Manuel Antonio. Calm waters, nice snorkeling, and lovely scenery!

• Playa Playitas – Located at the the north end of Playa Espadilla and nestled by rock formations, this small beach (known for being the LGBT meet up in the region) is almost an extension of that beach and therefore has similar qualities – great for sun bathing, surfing, and being close to the town.

• Playa Uvita (Whale’s Tail Beach) – Home to the iconic “Whale’s Tail” sandbar formation which is visible at low tide! This beach, inside of the Marino Ballena National Park in Uvita (a small drive from Quepos and Manuel Antonio), offers golden sand and lush jungle, with marine life like whales, dolphins, and turtles often seen offshore. Ideal for families, nature lovers, whale watchers, and snorkelers.

• Playa Colonia – This beach is also within the Marino Ballena National Park. It is a bit quieter than Playa Uvita, has more calm bays, and is good for relaxing beach days, beach-combing, and a bit of snorkeling.

• Playa Hermosa – Note: this is the one in Uvita, not the more famous one near Jaco! Located just outside the Marino Ballena Park, this public beach offers stretches of dark sand, less crowds , beautiful sunsets, and some good surfing.

• Playa Piñuela – Another hidden-gem beach in Uvita! This small crescent beach is tucked inside Marino Ballena Park and is great for families, swimming, catching the sunset (with views of the Tres Hermanas oceanic rock formation), and relaxing without too many crowds.

• Playa Ventanas – The last hidden gem on this list is known for its dramatic sea caves (ventanas = windows) which are accessible during low tide! Ideal for adventurers who like wild beaches, natural rock-formations and caves, wildlife exploring, and amazing photo ops.

23.) El Salto Manuel Antonio Waterfall Hike

A true hidden–gem, this hike to a small waterfall and swimming hole is a local secret!

It is a bit tricky to explore without a local guide, but it is possible!

Villas Jacquelina offers this amazing guide with directions and advice on how to find the waterfall, how to explore it, and – most importantly – how to do it all safely.

The hike is beautiful, but the trail is quite hard to spot. You will be passing in and out of the jungle stream, following it for around 1 hour before reaching the falls. You’ll then arrive at the top of waterfall and need to either make your way down an overgrown, percarious trail or jump off the falls in order to get to the swimming hole at the waterfall’s base!

You’ll then need to make your way back up the overgrowntrail or climb up the fall (with the use of a rope) to get back to the top of the waterfal and back home, so just keep in mind that this does require a certain level of fitness to complete and you will want to bring a dry bag to keep all of your gear safe and dry!

24.) Local Farmers Market (La Feria)

Every Friday and Saturday, you can experience one of the most authentic things to do in Quepos and Manuel – visiting the local farmers market!

The entrance is completely free and even if you don’t plan on buying anything, it’s just a joy to walk through the stalls, browse the foods (I bet that you will encounter fruit you never knew existed!), and chat with friendly locals.

But chances are… you’ll want to buy something! From fresh tropical fruits and veggies to homemade baked goods, cheeses, jams, herbs and spices, flowers, art, jewelry, clothing, and more – it’s all fresh, affordable, and made with love.

25.) Exploring the Town

Sometimes the best experiences are also the simplest – like just taking some time exploring the town itself!

Whether you’re visiting for a day or staying a while, exploring Quepos or Manuel Antonio streets guarantees something unforgettable for you to see, do, and (most importantly) eat!

Quepos has much more of a relaxed small-town vibe with lots of surf shops, small local shops, and thrift stores (called Americanos), whereas Manuel Antonio is much more of a beachy, tourist town with lots and lots of souvenir shops, rental shops, and restaurants.

We suggest spending at least a few hours wandering both towns, popping into the many local shops, souvenir stands, bakeries, delicious restaurants, thrift stores, and more.

Both are absolutely worth checking out, but Matze and I did enjoy Quepos quite a bit more!

The best beach in Quepos and Manuel Antonio depends on what you want to do at the beach!

Snorkeling, for example, is best done at Playa Biesanz, Playa Las Gemelas, or Playa Uvita. Surfing? Head to Playa Espadilla. Just want to have a relaxing family day at the beach? Playa Uvita or Playa Colonia are likely the best option for you. For an active beach day with lots of activities nearby, check out Playa Espadilla, Playa Manuel Antonio, or Playa Ventanas! The best beaches for getting away from the crowds tend to be Playa Biesanz, Playa Gemelas, and Playa Colonia.

Q4: What is the Weather Like in Quepos and Manuel Antonio?

Tucked along Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast, Quepos and Manuel Antonio enjoy balmy, tropical weather year-round, making them a great spot to visit no matter the season.

Temperatures usually hover around 86°F (30°C) during the day and dip to about 73°F (23°C) at night, creating the perfect mix of sunny beach days and comfortable evenings.

Like the rest of the country, the area has two main seasons: the dry season from December to April and the rainy season from May to November. September and October are typically the wettest months, while January through March bring the most sunshine and clear skies.

Even in the rainy season, though, showers tend to be short and often roll through in the early morning, late afternoon, or middle of the night, leaving most of the day open for exploring the beaches, spotting wildlife, and enjoying jungle hikes!

Q5: When is the Best Time to Visit Quepos and Manuel Antonio?

For guaranteed sunshine and little rain, head here during the dry season (December – April). Just keep in mind that this is high season, so you’ll be sharing the beaches and trails with lots of other visitors and prices will be a bit higher, too.

If you’d rather avoid the crowds and don’t mind some tropical showers, the rainy season (May – November) is a fantastic option. Rain tends to fall in quick, heavy bursts – meaning most of the day is still very adventure-friendly.

When we’ve explored in August and September, we found the perfect rhythm: plan your big activities right after breakfast (after the morning rain), enjoy a lunch indoors during the common afternoon rainfall, and then enjoy the rest of your outings after lunch. This way, we dodged most of the rain while also getting to experience Quepos and Manuel Antonio with less crowds!

Our tip: always carry a light, foldable rain poncho (like this one!) and wear waterproof shoes (like these!) since the weather in Costa Rica can be unpredictable – Quepos and Manuel Antonio are no exception!

Q6: What Should I Pack for a Trip to Quepos and Manuel Antonio?

Here are the items that should be in every suitcase when traveling to Quepos and Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica:

Swim suit – This is perhaps the number one item that should go into your bag for this region. It is a beach town, after all!
Sun protection – Whether that be caps, sunglasses, UV shirts and pants, etc. The sun can be quite harsh here, so plan accordingly!
Natural bug spray and sunscreen – Protect your body and, ideally, the environment too! The last thing we want is to contaminate the coral reefs or dense jungles with our products. Here is a great option for a natural bug spray and here is a great option for a reef-safe, water-resistant, mineral sunscreen.
Rain Gear – A rain jacket, umbrella, or foldable poncho is a must.
Waterproof Shoes – The trails can get muddy and it can rain a lot, so good waterproof shoes / hiking boots are essential!

Tip: our go-to shoes (which we wore everywhere, from the ocean to the rainforest) were these for me and these for Matze. Super comfy, incredibly easy to clean, and very durable. We can highly recommend them!

In addition to the above, we also highly suggest these:

Binoculars – Perfect for birdwatching & spotting wildlife! This small, easy to pack one is a particularly great option!
Snorkeling gear – You can always rent some, but to save some coin and avoid having to use previously used gear, you can always bring some with you! You will certainly get tons of use out of it in this region.
Camera (or at least a good phone) *Ideally waterproof* – You’ll want to capture the magic of Quepos and Manuel Antonio and, if you have a waterproof camera (like this cheaper one or even a fancy action camera), the magic of the reefs and oceanic wildlife, especially!
Wildlife Field Guide – A Costa Rica nature guide like this one can be tons of help and fun while you explore this region.

Q7: What Kind of Wildlife Will You See in Quepos and Manuel Antonio?

If you’re a nature lover, one of the nicest things to do in La Fortuna is wildlife spotting. This lush region is brimming with biodiversity!

From vibrant parrots and playful howler monkeys to leaf cutter ants (pictures above!), iguanas, coatis, sloths, and so much more, the variety of wildlife here is incredible and you’ll find plenty of opportunities to encounter these creatures in their natural habitats. Whether hiking around the national parks, suntanning on the beaches, visiting a wildlife refuge, or even just exploring the towns – the options are nearly endless!

Costa Rica may make up less than 1% of Earth’s landmass, but it’s home to nearly 6% of the entire world’s biodiversity, so no matter how long you stay, you’re sure to spot plenty of wild and wonderful things in La Fortuna and beyond!

Here are the best ways to reach Quepos and Manuel Antonio from your airport or city:

By Rental Car – The easiest and most flexible option! We personally rented from Zuma Rent-a-Car and highly recommend them. Quepos is about 3 hours from the San José airport and roughly 4 hours from the Liberia airport (traffic-dependent).

By Shuttle Transport – A stress-free option for those who prefer not to drive and are okay with spending a pretty penny on this service. Private and shared shuttles run from popular destinations like San José, Liberia, and other nearby cities. Here is one from San José, for example!

By Public Bus – The most budget-friendly choice. Long-distance buses connect Quepos and Manuel Antonio with a handful of major cities, though schedules can be limited so be sure to plan ahead. (It can honestly also be pretty scary driving the curvy, small, and pothole-filled Costa Rican roads in a huge bus!!)

Q10: How to Get Around Quepos and Manuel Antonio?

Getting around La Fortuna (really anywhere in Costa Rica!) can be a bit tricky, so choosing the right transportation is key to making the most of your trip! Here are the best ways to explore this region:

By Rental Car – in our opinion the best option!
We highly recommend renting a car for any trip to Costa Rica and Quepos and Manuel Antonio are no exception. Many areas can be very difficult and extremely long to get to by foot and public transport can be quite infrequent and unreliable.

As mentioned above, Matze and I used Zuma Rent-a-Car and had an amazing experience! Their team was super helpful and quick to respond.

By Taxi or Ride-Sharing Services
Taxis and services like Uber are generally available in Quepos and Manuel Antonio, but be cautious – some people have reported many taxi services in Costa Rica as scammy. Do a bit of research beforehand – especially about the general route the driver should take. We also suggest agreeing on at least an estimated price upfront.

By Foot or bike – a great option for short trips!
If you plan to stick to exploring either the main town of Quepos or Manuel Antonio and taking only guided tours with hotel pickups, you might not need a car at all! Most guided tours include pick-up and transportation to all the main hotels and hostels and if you have a hostel or hotel near the park and/or beach, you might not feel the need to explore further!

However, if you want to visit parks on your own schedule, head to any off-the-beaten-path spots (like hidden-gem beaches, El Salto Manuel Antonio, or further restaurants like Ronny’s Place), or if you want to take self-guided day trips or smaller tours, you will need a car (or car service).

Best Mid-Range Stays (<200 USD)

• Manuel Antonio Beach VON HOUSE – This apartment is incredibly close to Manuel Antonio National Park, yet is hidden away enough to remain quiet and peaceful. You’ll get a balcony, air conditioning, and a walk of less than five mins to get to Playa Espadilla!
• Nature Lovers Quepos – A nature-forward retreat just outside Quepos offering clean and air conditioned rooms, forested surroundings with tons of wildlife, a garden, and a spot just outside of Quepos.
• Forest Love Quepos – Immersed in the jungle in-between Quepos and Manuel Antonio, this apartment boasts large windows, cozy interiors, air conditioning, a patio, and frequent wildlife sightings right outside your door. Great for a “living with nature” feel!

What if You Only Have One Day in Quepos and Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica?

Only have one day in this region and you are wondering what are the very best things to do in Quepos and Manuel Antonio that cannot be missed? Well this depends a lot on you!

We would suggest hitting up Manuel Antonio National Park (see #18 above), as it truly is filled to the brim with wildlife and also has some great beaches! After or before this, we would highly suggest filling the rest of your day with one of the tours listed above.

We are partial to the quad tour (see #3), as we loved it so much ourselves, but you can never go wrong with any of the water tours (like a catamaran tour or a whale watching tour – see #4 and #7) and a tour of the traditional choco, coffee, and sugarcane industry (see #12) is also a great choice for an authentic and educational experience!

Lastly, we highly suggest ending your day with a night tour (see #2)! This is truly one thing that we cannot recommend enough and we suggest it to every, single person and group book. It is so much fun and can be quite thrilling, as well!

Hands-down one of the best things to do in La Fortuna and honestly one of the best things to do in the entire country! If you can only do one tour, make it a night tour. You will not regret it!

Exploring this x and nearby x at sunset and after dark is a thrilling, educational, and memorable experience. The amount of wildlife you encounter is truly shocking! Here is the briefest overview of what you might see:

– Tarantulas & neon-colored spiders (as someone afraid of spiders, even I have to say they are pretty damn cool here!)

03.) Canyoning Tours

With breathtaking waterfalls all across the country, there’s no better way to experience them and the beauty of Costa Rica than rappelling right down the cascades.

La Fortuna is one the top canyoning hot spots, along with Monteverde. Matthias and I booked a Monteverde Canyoning Tour, instead of one in La Fortuna, but the idea is the same and boy can we recommend a canyoning tour to you!!

It was both exhilarating and challenging (having water rush over my face while focusing on breathing and safety was intense to say the least, haha), but the expert guides ensure a safe and thrilling experience. We smiled for days afterwards, it was so much fun!

If you’re adventurous and at least somewhat athletic, this tour is an absolute must-do in Costa Rica!

04.) Coffee and Chocolate Tours

One of the most educational (and delicious!) things to do in La Fortuna is to dive into Costa Rica’s top exports: coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane.

The North Fields Coffee Tour is a standout experience that is quite famous – not just in La Fortuna, but in all of Costa Rica!

You’ll visit a family-run farm where you’ll learn how these crops are grown, harvested, and processed, with a special focus on coffee and how it makes its way from bean to cup.

05.) White Water Rafting Tour

One of the most adrenaline-filled things to do in La Fortuna is to go whitewater rafting! Costa Rica is ranked among the best rafting destinations in the world, with options for all skill levels.

The most famous spot in Costa Rica, the Pacuare River (where Matze and I went!), is on the Caribbean side in the far south, however near La Fortuna you’ll find two other, excellent choices: the Balsa River, perfect for beginners with fun class II–III rapids, and the Sarapiquí River, which offers wilder class IV adventures.

Depending on the season and rainfall, these tours can be a wild, splash-filled ride, but it is always worth it! Expect beautiful scenery, tons of wildlife sightings, and plenty of excitement.

06.) Zip Lining

One of the most thrilling things to do in La Fortuna is ziplining through the rainforest with incredible views of waterfalls and volcanoes – yes, it’s as epic as it sounds!

The best spot for ziplining in the area is Parque Arenal Mundo Aventura, where you’ll soar across 12 scenic cables with jaw-dropping views of the Arenal Volcano, Cerro Chato (another volcano!), and the famous La Fortuna Waterfall.

It’s a fantastic adventure for families, too, as the cable lines are exciting but not too intense and the minimum age is just 7 years old.

07.) Bogarin Sloth Trail Tour

If spotting a sloth is on your bucket list of things to do in La Fortuna, don’t miss the Bogarin Trail – one of the best places in Costa Rica to see them in the wild!

Located just outside town, this 2.5 km (1.5 mile) flat loop winds through lush rainforest and is home to 30 wild sloths, both two- and three-toed, plus frogs, birds, coatis, and so much more.

The trails were founded in 2000 by Joanne Bogarin as a way to protect wildlife after increasing urbanization threatened local habitats. Today, it’s one of the last secondary rainforests within La Fortuna’s city limits!

You can walk the trail on your own for $20 USD, as of 2025, but the heavily praised and recommended 2-hour guided tour ($45 USD) gives you a far better chance of spotting wildlife, as well as learning all about local plants, animals, and ecosystems.

The Bogarin Trail is also incredibly inclusive and accessible, with flat paths allowing for strollers and wheelchairs of all types, and guides are trained to accommodate all visitors, including the visually impaired.

08.) Horseback tour

One of the top thing to do in La Fortuna for nature lovers is to do a horseback riding tour!

Many tours take place on private land and with small groups, giving you a tranquil, immersive experience surrounded by rainforest, rivers, and views of the Arenal Volcano. Some even include stops for swimming in natural pools and rivers!

Whether you’re a first-time rider or a seasoned equestrian, there are great options for every level and most tours are well-suited to support you wherever you’re at.

09.) Maleku Indigenous Tour

Kapi Kapi! (Hello! in Maleku Jaika)

The Maleku Tribe is the smallest indigenous tribe in Costa Rica, with just over 600 people remaining. Deeply connected to the rainforest, the Maleku work to promote reforestation and to preserve their traditions, language, and way of life.

One of the highlights during our last trip to Costa Rica was visiting a Maleku village, where we got to learn their history, chat with the community, and experience their customs firsthand.

Sipping on a traditional drink called Chicha, an indigenous corn beer that is quite tasty, while listening to stories passed down for generations was such a unique and special experience!

If you’re interested in visiting and supporting the Maleku Tribe, book a tour here or look for it nestled within other day tours (like the one linked above at #1!), or learn more from their official site. Their culture, language, and traditions are at risk, so any support helps to preserve their heritage!

Important to note: look for tours that directly support the tribe and their reforestation goals! Be wary of tours that appear to be taking advantage of the tribe and/or tricking tourists with fake tribes. These unfortunately do exist. Research well and read reviews!

10.) ATV Tour

If you’re craving adventure, one of the most thrilling things to do in La Fortuna is to hop on an ATV tour and explore the region on wheels!

Zoom through rainforest trails, muddy back roads, wide open plains, and more – all with epic views of Arenal Volcano along the way. Most tours run a few hours and usually let you choose between riding solo, with a partner, or even in a UTV (buggy/side-by-side) if you prefer a more stable ride.

No experience? No problem. Friendly guides will teach you everything you need to know and make sure your ride is both safe and exhilarating. Note that if you do have experience, you tend to ride (in a group tour, that is) only as fast as the slowest rider. So if you are looking for something high-energy and fast, book a private tour instead!

Chasing this region’s most famous waterfalls is one of the most unforgettable things to do in La Fortuna, as it is home to two of Costa Rica’s most iconic spots: La Fortuna Waterfall and Rio Celeste.

La Fortuna Waterfall is a 70 meter (230 foot) cascade nestled in lush jungle, just a short hike down from the entrance. Once there, you’ll find stunning viewpoints, photo ops, and natural swimming holes to cool off in. Due to it’s slightly smaller size, most tour options are combo tours! Rio Celeste, located in Tenorio Volcano National Park, is a 30 meter (98 feet) famous for its almost neon-blue waters created by a volcanic mineral reaction. While it’s a bit farther from La Fortuna and requires more of a walk through the rainforest, it’s absolutely worth the journey. Home to four species of bats (plus crabs, fish, insects, frogs, and special cave spiders!), these caves offer an exciting mix of wildlife, history, and adventure.

With nearly 9,000 feet (2,800 meters) of caverns, there’s plenty to discover!

For a perfect mix of relaxation, sightseeing, and adventure, river tubing should be top of your list of things to do in La Fortuna!

This activity lets you float through stunning landscapes, spot wildlife, and enjoy the occasional light rapid – all while kicking back in an inner tube.

This also means it is a great choice for families, as it certainly one of the most exciting kid-friendly tour options!

The most popular tubing spot in all of Costa Rica is luckily very near to La Fortuna. It is the Rio Celeste, famous world-wide for its vibrant blue water, eye-catching waterfall, great swimming holes, and lush rainforest surroundings.

I am sure that we don’t need to tell you by now how beautiful and diverse the nature is in Costa Rica. La Fortuna is no exception! From hiking volcano trails to a stunning butterfly conservatory to hot springs and much more – there are many things to do in La Fortuna for all of us nature lovers.

15.) National Parks and Wildlife Reserves

Beyond La Fortuna’s main attractions and tours, be sure not to miss nearby gems like the overall region’s national parks and wildlife reserves!

These areas offer incredibly wildlife watching, rainforest immersion, stunning hikes, and jaw-dropping natural beauty.

Here is a brief overview of the top spots:

• Ecocentro Danaus – Just minutes from downtown, Ecocentro Danaus is a small nature reserve known for its easy trails and abundant wildlife. Spot sloths, frogs, birds, and even caimans while learning about local conservation efforts. There are options for self-guided tours on the property or various guided and combo tour options!
  
• Arenal Volcano National Park – This 29,692-acre national park is a must when looking for things to do in La Fortuna. Visiting Lake Arenal is easily one of the most varied and customizable things to do in La Fortuna! Whether you’re chasing adventure or tranquility, Lake Arenal adds a perfect balance of natural beauty and outdoor fun to your La Fortuna itinerary.

Nestled at the base of the Arenal Volcano, this stunning lake is the largest in Costa Rica and offers breathtaking views in every direction.

It’s a haven for outdoor lovers – kayak and paddleboard rentals are widely available, and the usually calm waters make it perfect for beginners and pros alike. There are even tons of great group tours if you are unsure about going alone!

For those looking for a bit more adventure, you can go boating, windsurfing, or try your luck fishing for the lake’s famous rainbow bass. Just make sure to check the time you will visit with the weather and book these bigger activities in advance. Most fishing and boating tours, for example, need at least a weeks notice!

If you’re after a slower pace, though, no worries! Enjoy a lakeside picnic, grab a drink or meal at one of the many cafés and restaurants overlooking the water, or simply sit and take in the peaceful scenery.

17.) Butterfly Conservatory

Costa Rica is home to around 1,250 butterfly species – over 10% of the world’s total, making a visit to a butterfly conservatory one of the most beautiful and educational things to do in La Fortuna!

The Butterfly Conservatory in El Castillo, located in-between La Fortuna and Monteverde (making it a great road trip pit-stop!), is the best one in all of Costa Rica.

This conservatory has the largest collection in the entire country and offers an up-close look at stunning, vibrant butterflies while teaching visitors all about their life cycles and conservation efforts.

In addition, they have tons of trails and other exhibits (even a botanical garden!), allowing you to see and experience much more than just butterfly exhibits. We cannot recommend this spot enough!

It’s peaceful and inspiring for anyone interested in rainforest ecosystems and wildlife, especially butterflies, and it is a great alternative to more crowded attractions – definitely one of the most underrated things to do in La Fortuna.

18.) Místico Hanging Bridges Park

Exploring the Místico Arenal Hanging Bridges is easily one of the most magical things to do near La Fortuna!

This lush rainforest reserve offers three different scenic trails from the short 1.6 km (1 mi) trail up to the full 3.5 km (2.7 mi) trail. Along the way you will cross up to 16 bridges (including six hanging bridges!) that bring you eye-level with the canopy. The tallest bridge is a whopping 55 m (147 ft)!

From the many bridges and high vantage points, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the rainforest, sweeping valleys, and Arenal Volcano in the distance. This makes it a paradise for photographers and wildlife lovers, with frequent sightings of toucans, sloths, howler monkeys, and more.

For the best chance of spotting animals, consider booking one of Místico’s guided tours. That said, even a self-guided visit is sure to be a highlight of your La Fortuna itinerary!

While admission is a bit pricier than the average nature park, the combination of misty jungle scenery and spectacular volcano views makes this an unforgettable experience for any nature lovers.

19.) Proyecto Asis Animal Sanctuary

Animal lovers, rejoice – Proyecto Asis is a sanctuary and rescue center just south of La Fortuna dedicated to rehabilitating Costa Rica’s wildlife and they offer amazing tour and volunteer options!

They have several tour options, but their most popular and highest rated is their daily “Wildlife Tour” where a guide will take you around the center and you’ll be able to see their rescued animals, such as monkeys, parrots, coatis, and so much more.

For an even more in-depth and rewarding tour experience, add on a short volunteer session after your tour! For roughly an hour and a half, You’ll help prepare animal diets, learn about enrichment efforts, and watch from a short distance as the staff feed the animals with what you helped prepare.

Proyecto Asis also offers longer volunteer programs, as well as a unique overnight homestay with a local family or an apartment for multi-night stays!

20.) Old Lava Flow Hikes

Skip the crowds at Arenal National Park and head to two nearby gems – Arenal 1968 and Mirador El Silencio – both offering dramatic volcanic terrain, old lava flow trails, and jaw-dropping views of Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal.

Arenal 1968 offers three scenic trails (about 10 km / 6.2 miles total), multiple viewing platforms, a café, and well-maintained paths, making it ideal for those who want a more polished, tourist-friendly hiking experience. It’s pricier than some options, especially for guided tours, but the views are just spectacular.

Mirador El Silencio offers six wilder, less-crowded trails (totaling 14 km / 8.5 miles). It’s more rugged and budget-friendly, but still boasting stunning views. Perfect for travelers craving a quieter, off-the-beaten-path adventure! This is our personal recommendation

Both spots offer self-guided or guided hikes. While guides are never essential… you probably already know how we feel about them by now! They can enrich your visit a LOT with history and culture knowledge, wildlife spotting, and insider tips (like the best restaurants in town and more!).

For nature lovers, hiking one – or even both – of these volcanic landscapes is easily one of the best things to do in La Fortuna!

21.) Luxury Hot Springs Day Pass

No trip to La Fortuna is complete without a relaxing soak in its famous volcanic hot springs. And the best part? You don’t have to stay at a fancy resort to enjoy them!

Many of La Fortuna’s luxury hotels offer day passes that give you access to naturally heated spring water with features like beautifully landscaped pools, cascading waterfalls, swim-up bars, and even slides! These resorts also tend to include other amenities like entrance to their restaurants, showers, lounge areas, and more in the day pass price.

For the ultimate splurge, head to Tabacón Thermal Resort or The Springs Resort & Spa – both world-famous for their 5-star facilities and stunning settings. Just be sure to book at least 2–3 weeks in advance to be sure you can secure your spot. They are popular and do have crowd limits each day!

For a similar experience for a bit less money, try Baldi Hot Springs, Eco-Termales Fortuna, or Titoku Hot Springs!

Free Things to do in La Fortuna: 

There is a handful of great budget-friendly activities in La Fortuna, including a real gem – free hot springs!!

22.) El Choyin – Free Hot Springs

One of the top attractions in La Fortuna are the hot springs and while many are located in high-end resorts that charge steep entrance fees, there’s a budget-friendly hot springs alternative – the FREE ‘El Choyin’ hot spring!

It’s a backpacker favorite and a must-do experience in La Fortuna for anyone on a budget.

Expect a lively atmosphere at El Choyin in the afternoons and evenings, especially on weekends. It can get quite busy as the day goes on! For a quieter experience, visit during the week in the late morning.

Last time we were there mid-week in August, we enjoyed a peaceful late afternoon soak, with locals lighting candles around the springs as the sun went down. The experience was unforgettable!

And speaking of locals – many come here to relax and this is the only spot they have! Most cannot afford the fancier, more private, tourist-targeted hot springs in the region. Please be respectful and kind! You are a visitor and this is their home.

The only potential cost at El Choyin is parking and this varies between 1,000-5,000+ colones (cash only!). But keep in mind that you do not need to pay these ‘parking attendants’ who stand next to the road anything at all – they are not official and it is considered by some as a form of scamming.

However we almost always chose to pay these ‘attendants’ a little bit as they will keep an eye on your car and deter car thieves (though still leave nothing of value inside to be safe!), you’re able to park very close to your activity, and because we just felt like when we can afford it, why not? We were thankful to have someone keep an eye on our car and so it was a bit like paying or tipping for a service in our eyes!

Tip: you can always barter the price they tell you at first! Don’t be afraid to negotiate in Costa Rica.

If you do not want to pay anything then you can also just park for free further up the road where there is no attendant, but keep in mind that car break-ins are certainly not unheard of, so park wisely and leave nothing valuable in the car.

23.) El Salto Swimming Hole

Another one of the best free things to do in La Fortuna is to visit El Salto – a local swimming hole complete with a rope swing, two small waterfalls, and refreshingly crisp river water.

Just a few minutes from town, El Salto feels a little bit like a hidden oasis, surrounded by lush jungle and rocky outcroppings. It really is the ideal place to cool down in the middle of a day of exploring!

It does have one little quirk, though: a car bridge just a stones throw from the hole where passing tourists will likely stop, wave, and snap photos. We found this quite funny on both sides, though (from the hole and as a tourist), and for us it only added to the charm! It does ruin the whole ‘hidden’ oasis vibe just a bit, though, haha.

The spot can also get quite lively and loud in the evenings and on weekends, just like El Choyin (mentioned above), so visit in the morning during the week for a quieter vibe. Otherwise be ready for lots of families and kids swinging and splashing all around!

To find directions and info, just type El Salto into Waze – the much better version of Google Maps – and you are good to go!

24.) Explore the City

Sometimes the best experiences in La Fortuna are also the simplest – like just taking some time exploring the town itself!

Spend a few hours wandering its streets, popping into the many local shops, souvenir stands, bakeries, delicious restaurants, thrift stores, and more. There’s a little something for everyone, and you never know what hidden gem you might find!

Be sure to stop by Parque de La Fortuna, the central park, where you can relax under the shade, enjoy the vibrant local life with a copa (a shaved ice dessert) in hand, and people-watch to your heart’s content. On one of our visits, we even stumbled upon the sweetest old-timey quartet of elderly men singing alongside live musicians ????

Whether you’re visiting for a day or staying a while, exploring La Fortuna’s streets guarantees something unforgettable for you to see, do, and (most importantly) eat!

25.) Visit Angelina’s Gardens

If you’re in La Fortuna and looking for a peaceful, nature-filled hidden gem, this stunning garden is a must-visit!

While there’s no entrance fee (so it is technically free) there is a donation box to help with the upkeep. It’s very clear how much care and effort goes into maintaining this beautiful space so we do suggest bringing any and all spare change to donate if you are in the area!

The garden is home to thousands of plant species (including some more rare ones!), which in turn attract an incredible variety of wildlife. We spotted the cutest chubby bumblebees, vibrantly colored butterflies, and even grasshoppers as big as your fist!

There are also fun features like scenic towers to climb up, archways, art created by the plants, and even a small hedge maze to explore.

Beyond the lush greenery, the view of Arenal Volcano from the gardens is breathtaking. We highly recommend visiting on a clear day or even at sunset for a stunning viewpoint and great photo ops!

Q3: What is the Weather Like in La Fortuna?

Nestled in the northern highlands, La Fortuna enjoys warm, tropical weather year-round, making it a fantastic destination in any season.

Average temperatures typically range from a high of around 85°F (29°C) to a low of about 70°F (21°C), so you can expect warm days and comfortable nights.

La Fortuna follows Costa Rica’s traditional dry and wet seasons, with the dry season running from December to April and the green (rainy) season from May to November. September and October usually bring the heaviest rains, while February and March tend to be the driest and sunniest months.

Even during the rainy season, though, rain showers are often fairly short and most often take place in the early mornings, late afternoons, and nighttime, leaving plenty of time for outdoor adventures in between!

Q4: When is the Best Time to Visit La Fortuna?

No matter when you visit, there are always amazing things to do in La Fortuna! The best time to visit just depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.

If you want sunny skies and minimal rain, the dry season (December – April) is the time to visit. However, this is also peak tourist season, so just be ready for the big crowds and higher prices.

If you prefer fewer crowds and don’t mind a bit of rain, the wet season (May – November) is the best choice. Yes, there will be rain, but it usually comes in short, intense bursts in the mornings, late afternoons, or at night, leaving you more than enough dry windows for exploring.

When we visited in August and September, we planned all our main, important activities right after breakfast and the rest after lunch. This schedule helped us avoid most of the rain while also enjoying La Fortuna without heavy crowds!

A good tip is to always carry a light, foldable rain poncho (like this one!) and wear waterproof shoes (like these!) since the weather in Costa Rica can be unpredictable – La Fortuna is no exception. No matter when you go, though, this beautiful volcanic region is always worth visiting!

Q5: What Should I Pack for a Trip to La Fortuna?

Here are the items that should be in every suitcase when traveling to La Fortuna, Costa Rica:

Swim suit – This is one of the most important items for La Fortuna! You don’t want to miss out on all the lake activities, the swimming holes, and the hot springs!
Sun protection – Whether that be caps, sunglasses, UV shirts and pants, etc. The sun can be quite harsh here, so plan accordingly!
Natural bug spray and sunscreen – Protect your body and, ideally, the environment too! The last thing we want is to contaminate the rivers and hot springs or dense jungles with our products. Here is a great option for a natural bug spray and here is a great option for a reef-safe, water-resistant, mineral sunscreen.
Rain Gear – A rain jacket, umbrella, or foldable poncho is a must.
Waterproof Shoes – The trails can get muddy and it can rain a lot, so good waterproof shoes / hiking boots are essential!

Tip: our go-to shoes (which we wore everywhere, from the ocean to the rainforest) were these for me and these for Matze. Super comfy, incredibly easy to clean, and very durable. We can highly recommend them!

In addition to the above, we also highly suggest these:

Binoculars – Perfect for birdwatching & spotting wildlife! This small, easy to pack one is a particularly great option!
Camera (or at least a good phone) *Ideally waterproof* – You’ll want to capture the magic of La Fortuna and, if you have a waterproof camera (like this cheaper one or even a fancy action camera), all the fun water sports in the region too!
Wildlife Field Guide – A Costa Rica nature guide like this one can be tons of help and fun while you explore this region.

Here are the top ways to reach La Fortuna from your airport or city:

By Rental Car – The easiest and most flexible option! We personally rented from Zuma Rent-a-Car and highly recommend them. La Fortuna is about 3 hours from the San José airport and roughly 4 hours from the Liberia airport (traffic-dependent).

By Shuttle Transport – A stress-free option for those who prefer not to drive. Private and shared shuttles run from popular destinations like San José, Liberia, and other nearby cities. Here is an one from San José, for example!

By Public Bus – The most budget-friendly choice. Long-distance buses connect La Fortuna with a handful of major cities, though schedules can be limited so be sure to plan ahead. (It can honestly also be pretty scary driving the curvy, small, and pothole-filled Costa Rican roads in a huge bus!!)

To check for public bus connections in your origin city towards La Fortuna, Google is your best friend!

Q9: How to Get Around La Fortuna?

Getting around La Fortuna (really anywhere in Costa Rica!) can be a bit tricky, so choosing the right transportation is key to making the most of your trip! Here are the best ways to explore this region:

By Rental Car – in our opinion the best option!
We highly recommend renting a car for any trip to Costa Rica and La Fortuna is no exception. Many areas can be very difficult and extremely long to get to by foot and public transport can be quite infrequent and unreliable.

As mentioned above, Matze and I used Zuma Rent-a-Car and had an amazing experience! Their team was super helpful and quick to respond.

By Taxi or Ride-Sharing Services
Taxis and services like Uber are generally available in La Fortuna, but be cautious – some people have reported many taxi services in Costa Rica as scammy. Do a bit of research beforehand – especially about the general route the driver should take. We also suggest agreeing on at least an estimated price upfront.

By Foot – a great option for short trips!
If you plan to stick to exploring the main town of La Fortuna and taking only guided tours with hotel pickups, you might not need a car at all! The town is very walkable, and most guided tours include pick-up and transportation to all the main hotels and hostels.

However, if you want to visit parks on your own schedule, head to the off-the-beaten-path spots (like El Choyin or El Salto), or take self-guided day trips or smaller tours, you will need a car (or car service).
