Matze and I first visited Costa Rica on our honeymoon back in 2022. We road tripped all over the country for more than four weeks and we ended up spending an entire week in Puerto Viejo. It was one of our favorite spots in all of Costa Rica!
It is such a fun beach town, famous for it’s vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture, food, and vibes!
From exciting tours to delicious food, incredible snorkeling spots, and so much more, Puerto Viejo offers an insane amount of fun and wildlife with a long list of activities to fill up your itinerary.
💡 Don’t miss the FAQ at the bottom where we answer your top questions about Puerto Viejo, such as the best time to visit, how to get around, the best places to stay, and other essential travel tips.
Let’s jump right into the 25 best things to do in Puerto Viejo!
Short on time?
Puerto Viejo is known for it’s stunning beaches, incredible snorkeling, and fun Caribbean lifestyle. You can typically expect great nightlife, delicious food, and tons of wildlife. It is one of Matze and my favorite places in all of Costa Rica and we suggest a stay of at least 3-4 days to soak it all in.
We highly suggest snorkeling the coral reef in Cahuita, making your own chocolate, doing a night walk, and visiting a national park (Cahuita or Manzanillo) or rescue center (Jaguar Rescue, Ara Manzanillo, or Sloth Sanctuary)!

Tours, Classes, and Adventurous Things to do in Puerto Viejo:
Looking for tours and adventurous things to do in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca? From making your own chocolate to jungle hikes, white water rafting, horseback riding on the beach, and so much more, these adventures are must-do activities!
01.) Snorkeling Tour

Absolutely one of the best tours you can take in Puerto Viejo! The snorkeling is just incredible in this region – arguably the best in the entire country.
Out of all of the things Matze and I managed to stuff into our one-week stay in PV, going on a snorkeling tour was one of our favorites and is, in our opinion, certainly one of the most memorable things to do in Puerto Viejo.
From curious pufferfish, to gentle nurse sharks, incredibly colorful schools of fish, giant sea turtles, and so much more. You are certain to see an immense number of species on any snorkeling tour in this region.
In addition, you have the coral reef in as well! While it has been damaged and has shrunk a lot in the past decades, it still remains a beautiful and colorful sight that makes any snorkeling trip even more magical.
We highly suggest going on a tour vs. going out on your own, as there are some places in Puerto Viejo, such as Cahuita (arguably the best spot), where you can only go with a guide. In addition, a guide knows exactly where to go and when to move on to get the best possible sights.
Here is a great tour option or you can just head straight to Cahuita (or Google) to find more!
Pro tip: tours do have disinfected snorkeling gear (typically one-size and low to normal quality) for you to use, but we suggest buying your own to have a perfect fit, an easy tour, and complete freedom to snorkel outside of the tour whenever you want!
02.) Chocolate Making Experience

Puerto Viejo is one of the best spots in Costa Rica to learn about and make your own chocolate!
The entire country has a deep history with cacao and chocolate, and a great tour lets you experience the entire process hands-on.
Matthias and I took an incredible chocolate tour where we walked a small farm, saw cacao trees up close, and tasted every stage of chocolate-making – including tasting fresh cacao fruit (sooo delicious!).
With all the steps pre-prepped for us, we got to grind beans by hand, winnow, temper, pour chocolate into molds, and even drink fresh chocolate drinks. At the end, we took home handmade chocolate and a bag of cacao nibs.
We highly recommend the tour we took – it’s fun, interactive, and you get to take home delicious handmade treats!
P.S – this spot also has the cutest pets! Dogs, cats, chickens, and more. The best part is that their rooster will sometimes walk into the main room pictured above (which has great acoustics), scream out a cock-a-doodle-doo just to hear it echo, and then strut away again, haha.
03.) Day Tours

Day tours are hands-down one of the best things to do in Puerto Viejo if you are short on time, but still want to see and do a lot!
These action-packed adventures combine multiple must-do activities into one epic experience – helping you see more, do more, and also save more compared to booking separate tours.
On these tours you will see tons of wildlife, experience some of the top sights and activities in the region, and you’ll usually get to snack on some tasty and extremely fresh fruit or a traditional lunch along the way. Plus, spending a half or full day with a small group usually creates great friendships, making the experience all that more special.
One day tour option we would recommend is the Cahuita National Park Tour and Water Experience. You will explore Cahuita with a professional guide to help you spot all the wildlife and then you’ll head to the famous Bri Bri waterfall on indigenous land to snack and swim.
Another amazing and highly rated option is the Full Day Cahuita Snorkel and Sloth Sanctuary tour where you get to first explore Cahuita by land and sea and then head to the famous Sloth Sanctuary (more on that below at #18!) to learn about sloth rescue efforts in the region.
Have fun exploring Puerto Viejo!
04.) Jungle Hike and Waterfalls Tour

Looking for some adventurous and athletic things to do in Puerto Viejo? This hidden gems hike is perfect for those of you craving off-the-beaten-path experiences in Costa Rica!
Starting at Playa Negra, this guided tour takes you through the lush rainforest all the way to the stunning 45 meter (almost 150 feet!) high Kekoldi Waterfall, tucked away in the Kekoldi Indigenous Reserve.
Along the way, you’ll pass by a couple of traditional Kekoldi huts and learn about the tribe’s deep connection with the flora, fauna, and sustainable living practices.
The trek is about 10 km (just over 6 miles) and is usually muddy, so be sure to come prepared with the right gear and fitness level. If you are ready for a rewarding challenge, though, this hike offers a peaceful, uncrowded escape into the Puerto Viejo jungles.

05.) White Water Rafting in the Pacuare

For an adrenaline-packed adventure in Costa Rica, white water rafting on the Pacuare River is an absolute must!
Ranked among the best rafting destinations in the entire world, it offers routes for all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned thrill-seekers. Depending on the season and tour type you choose, the rapids can be quite the wild ride!
The starting point for most of these tours and the river itself is not in Puerto Viejo (it is around 1-3 hours away), though it is on the way to and from San José and most other Costa Rican cities, most tours will transport you to and from Puerto Viejo, and it is just worth it!!
We chose Exploradores for our tour, and it was the highlight of our month-long honeymoon. The three-hour journey was exhilarating – at one point, I even flew out of the raft, but I came out of the water nearly crying with laughter and the guide scooped me up right away!
We personally made a pit stop in Siquirres, a little town that most white water rafting tours operate out of, on our way out of Puerto Viejo towards San José. We left PV early, did the tour, spent the night in a stunning mountain-top home in Siquirres, and then headed on to San José the day after. This worked great for us, having a rental car, and we would highly recommend it!
Here is the tour we took and here are some other great tours.
06.) Night Walks

Without a doubt night walk tours are one of the best things to do in Puerto Viejo and honestly one of the best things to do in the entire country! If you can only do one tour, make it a night tour. You will not regret it!
Exploring this Caribbean beach town and nearby forests at sunset and after dark is a thrilling, educational, and memorable experience. The massive amount of wildlife you encounter is truly shocking! Here’s just a peek at what you might see:
– Tarantulas & neon-colored spiders (as someone afraid of spiders, even I have to say they are pretty damn cool here!)
– Snakes, including the infamous Fer-de-Lance
– Frogs & Toads, like the red-eyed tree frog and the tiny “denim pants” frog
– Hummingbirds (they sleep on tree branches at night!)
– Scorpions – they glow under UV light!
– Kinkajous, quirky little mammals that, if you’re very lucky, you might spot in the trees above
Here is a great 5 star night tour in Puerto Viejo and here was the night tour we personally took that we loved (a bit of a drive, past manzanillo, but soooo worth it – wow!)
07.) Kayaking Tours

One of the more relaxing nature-filled things to do in Puerto Viejo is kayaking!
One top-rated spot for kayak rentals and tours is Pacho’s Place in Punta Uva. Their Sloth Jungle and River Kayaking Tour is a must-do, guiding you on both a jungle walk and kayak tour through some of the region’s most scenic and wildlife-rich landscapes.
Keep your eyes peeled for sloths (of course!), monkeys, colorful parrots, exotic birds, reptiles, and so much more. Your local guide will be helping point them out as well! It’s an up-close, peaceful, and animal-packed way to explore Puerto Viejo’s lush landscape.
Book your Sloth Jungle and River Tour today! For rentals and other tour options, you can either check Google, or just walk along your beach of choice.
08.) Horseback Tours

Another one of the top things to do in Puerto Viejo for nature and animal lovers is to do a horseback riding tour.
During our time in Costa Rica, we saw many horseback tours and Puerto Viejo is arguably one of the best places to experience this!
Many tours take place on private land, meaning it’s just you, your small group, and untouched nature all around. The sandy beaches at sunset or the lush jungle treks make for the most stunning views no matter what part of the region you take your tour in.
No matter if you are a beginner or an experienced rider, there is always a tour for you! We saw plenty of tours open for absolute, never-touched-a-horse-before beginners, so no worries at all if this is you.
Here is one great beach-side tour option that is 2 hours in the morning or at sunset and here is an all-day, private option for a horseback tour and then a walking tour in Cahuita!
09.) ATV Tours

Looking for a more active way to see Costa Rica? An ATV tour is an incredible choice!
Most tours last a few hours and you can usually choose to ride solo or with a partner. Some tours even offer UTVs (Buggies/Side-by-Sides)! And no worries if you have never ridden a quad before – the professional guides are there to teach you the ropes and keep an eye on you along the way.
Pura Ride in Puerto Viejo has the best ATV tours in this region. They take you through jungle trails, cacao plantations, and to lookout points with spectacular views. It is the perfect blend of excitement, adventure, and natural beauty!

11.) Birdwatching Tours

Birdwatching in Costa Rica is a dream come true for all you birders out there. It is one of the most rich countries in the world in terms of raw biodiversity.
Even if you are not a birder, going on a birdwatching tour can be one of the most rewarding things to do in Puerto Viejo – you are sure to spot rare and vibrant wildlife across many different species!
The Puerto Viejo de Talamanca region is home to over 350 bird species, including toucans, parrots, guans, swallows, trogons, hummingbirds, and even seasonal raptors migrating between November and April!
Whether you’re a casual observer or a hardcore birder, a guided birdwatching tour is an unforgettable way to connect even further with the area’s rich biodiversity.
Book the top rated birdwatching tour in Puerto Viejo here.
Pro tip: While some tours provide shared binoculars, bringing your own makes a huge difference. Unfortunately we did not bring any on our honeymoon and decided to buy (overpriced) ones mid-trip – so bring your own from home and thank us later!!
12.) Caribbean Cooking Class

For one of the most authentic things to do in Puerto Viejo, don’t miss this private Caribbean cooking class with a local chef!
You’ll join the lovely Josefina in her kitchen, where she’ll guide you through preparing a traditional meal and drink using recipes passed down through generations. It’s a delicious taste of the rich Afro-Caribbean culture that makes Puerto Viejo so special!
As you cook, you’ll also have a chance to learn about the ingredients, local traditions, the vibrant history and culture of the region, and even get insider tips on the best spots to explore in the area.
Book your unforgettable cooking class with Josefina here!
13.) Photography Tour

If you love photography, this 2–3 hour photo tour is one of the most creative things to do in Puerto Viejo!
Explore the vibrant town, coastal trails, hidden viewpoints, famous beaches, and more with the help of a local guide and fellow photographer who knows all the best spots.
Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, your guide will offer personalized tips to help you capture the true essence of Puerto Viejo – from it’s wildlife to it’s people to it’s landscapes.

14.) Bri Bri Indigenous Tour

One of the most impactful things to do in Puerto Viejo is visiting the Bri Bri, Costa Rica’s second-largest indigenous tribe, to learn about their culture, traditions, and connection to the land.
The most popular tour options include chocolate-making tours, medicinal plant walks, and visits to the Bri Bri waterfall (see #10 above for this one!).
For a respectful, authentic experience, we recommend Willie’s Tours CR – they partner directly with the Bri Bri community and prioritize cultural preservation, unlike some other operators. (Be sure to always research the company if you end up going with another one!).
Willie’s offers everything from short half-day cacao and plant tours to multi-day immersive experiences featuring sweat lodges, cleansing ceremonies, and night walks.
Explore the various Bri Bri tours with Willie’s Tours CR here (note: you might have to scroll down a bit to find them!).
15.) Yoga Classes

Looking to relax and reset after all your jungle and ocean adventures? One of the most rejuvenating things to do in Puerto Viejo is to take a yoga class!
Svastha is one of the most highly rated options in the region. Nestled in the forest with stunning ocean views, this peaceful yoga studio offers a variety of classes twice a day, Monday through Friday, all at an affordable price.
Whether you’re a dedicated yogi or just craving a moment of calm, this is a beautiful place to unwind.
After class, you can even enjoy a nourishing meal at their on-site vegetarian café, which focuses on holistic health and wellness.
Pro Tip: If you’re craving a more intense and lengthy experience, consider a yoga retreat! Just search “yoga retreat Puerto Viejo” to find several highly rated options in the area.
Nature-Inspired Things to do in Puerto Viejo:
I think it is a given by now that there is endless untamed, beautiful nature to be found in Costa Rica. Puerto Viejo is no exception! From animal rescue centers to a long list of water sports and so much more more – there are many things to do in Puerto Viejo for all of us nature lovers.
16.) Jaguar Rescue Center

One of the most meaningful things to do in Puerto Viejo is a visit to the Jaguar Rescue Center – one of the top animal rescue centers in all of Costa Rica!
Located right by Playa Cocles in the heart of Puerto Viejo, this incredible rescue center is dedicated to rehabilitating and releasing injured, orphaned, and displaced wildlife. They offer both public and private tours, volunteer opportunities, symbolic animal “adoptions”, and even accommodation options for your stay in the region!
We highly recommend the public tour – a 1.5-hour experience where you’ll see a variety of native animals up close while also learning about various species, their stories, and animal rescue in Costa Rica in general. Group sizes are small, guides are knowledgeable and passionate, and best of all, your tour fee goes directly toward supporting the center’s life-saving work.
Book your Jaguar Rescue Center tour today!
17.) National Parks & Nature Preserves

Did you know that more than 25% of the land in Costa Rica is devoted national park space?! So it is no wonder that no matter what city you visit, you are sure to be just a stone’s throw away from a stunning national park.
Puerto Viejo is home to two incredible gems: Cahuita National Park and the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. Both offer unforgettable ways to connect with Costa Rica’s wildlife, coastlines, and jungles.
Cahuita:
Just a short drive from Puerto Viejo, this stunning beach-side park is a must–visit. It does have a small fee to enter, but that fee goes directly into supporting the park.
Cahuita features warm Caribbean waters, white sandy beaches, and a 2+ km (1.2 mile) trail that winds through the jungle and along the shore. You can explore on your own or hire a guide – either way, you’re likely to see tons of Capuchin monkeys, raccoons, crabs, colorful birds and so much more!
Want to snorkel the coral reef? This is the BEST spot in all of Costa Rica, but you’ll need to book a tour with a guide for that part. More on snorkeling tours above at #1!
Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge
Technically not a national park, this state and privately owned refuge spans jungle, mangroves, beach, and more. Gandoca-Manzanillo is massive, incredibly bio-diverse, and (best of all) free to explore.
You can easily spend a full day here spotting wildlife, hiking, or just relaxing on hidden beaches. There is definitely more variety in terms of the landscape here, when compared to Cahuita!
Pro Tip for both parks: Want to spot tons of wildlife? Keep an eye out for fruiting wild avocado trees – they’re one of the top food sources in Costa Rica. And don’t forget your binoculars! Even on a guided tour with shared binoculars, having your own ensures you never miss an epic animal sighting.
18.) Sloth Sanctuary

If you love sloths, a visit to this sloth rescue center in Puerto Viejo is a must!
This sanctuary allows you to see and learn about rescued sloths, many of whom have suffered injuries from car accidents, animal attacks, or falling onto power lines. While it’s heartbreaking to hear their stories, it’s also incredibly heartwarming to see them getting the care they need.
There are two tour options:
– The “Buttercup Tour” – A 1 hour long tour where you can meet several sloths and learn all about them. The price is 28 USD as of 2025. (We did this and loved it!)
– The “Insider Tour” – A 2 hour long behind-the-scenes experience that even takes you into the NICU, where baby sloths are cared for! However, this exclusive tour is more than five times the price of the regular tour, at 150 USD as of 2025, so it is definitely a splurge.
Check out their official website for more details!
P.S. If you’re looking for a place to stay nearby, they also own a small inn called “Buttercup Inn“. It’s a simple, cozy spot – not right in the city, but if you have a rental car, it could be a fun accommodation option!
19.) Water Sports (Surfing, Kayaking, and More!)

If you love being in or near the water, you’re in for a treat – water sports are some of the most easy and varied things to do in Puerto Viejo!
This vibrant coastal town offers it all: relaxing beach days, kayaking through wildlife-rich mangroves, surfing powerful waves, snorkeling coral reefs, and so much more. No matter your travel style, group size, or budget, you will certainly find the perfect activity to fit your vibe.
For most beach fun and for surfing, you can usually rent gear right on the beach. Surfboards are particularly easy to find last-minute at most beaches – just take a stroll, check out a few stands, compare prices, and please don’t be afraid to barter!
For experiences like snorkeling and mangrove kayaking, tours are the way to go. Snorkeling in Cahuita National Park, for example, must be done with a guide due to park regulations and reef preservation (see #1 above). Booking a mangrove kayak tour is also highly recommended by us – it’s safer, smoother, and made so much better with a knowledgeable guide who’ll point out monkeys, sloths, exotic birds, and more along the way (see #7 above).
And of course, for pure relaxation, Puerto Viejo’s beautiful beaches are free and plentiful. Whether you’re swimming, sunbathing, or just walking along the coastline, you will be greeted with warm sunshine, stunning views, and refreshing salt water.
Tip: Want help picking a beach? Scroll to #24 below for our quick guide to Puerto Viejo’s best beaches!
20.) Day Trip to Manzanillo

Looking to venture a bit outside of town? A visit to Manzanillo is one of the best day trips to take in Puerto Viejo!
Just a short drive from Puerto Viejo, Manzanillo is packed with biodiversity, natural beauty, and unforgettable experiences. This coastal gem is home to the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge (see #17 above), the Ara Manzanillo Macaw Reserve (check out #21 right below), and a variety of other tours, nature walks, and water activities.
If you have a rental car (which we highly recommend for Costa Rica!), it’s a very easy, quick, and scenic drive. No car, though? No problem! You can easily get there by taxi, tuk-tuk, local bus, or even bike if you’re up for the 10+ km (6+ mile) ride!
With its lush jungle, ocean views, unique wildlife, and plethora of adventures, Manzanillo is a must-visit spot that will add even more magic to your Puerto Viejo itinerary!
21.) Ara Manzanillo Macaw Rescue

Just outside of Puerto Viejo, the vibrant region of Manzanillo is already a top day trip destination (see #20 above!), but one activity you absolutely shouldn’t miss is a visit to the Ara Manzanillo macaw rescue and rehabilitation center.
This incredible conservation project has single-handedly helped increase the Great Green Macaw population in Costa Rica by over 30% since it’s founding roughly 15 years ago!
Their one-hour guided tour (just $20 as of 2025) takes you on a walk through the rehabilitation station where knowledgeable guides will teach you about the macaws, all of their various conservation efforts, the local ecosystem, and more – all while leading you towards a stunning lookout point on their reserve.
If you’re passionate about wildlife rescue or simply love birds, this will be one of the most meaningful and educational things to do near Puerto Viejo for you and your travel group!
Plan your visit to Ara Manzanillo and book your tour on their website here!

22.) Explore the Town (Art, Boutique Shops, and More!)

Puerto Viejo was one of the last stops on Matze and my very first trip to Costa Rica – our month-long road tripping honeymoon – and it quickly became our favorite stop!
Largely due to the fact that there are so many exciting things to do in Puerto Viejo thanks to its unique location nestled between the Caribbean Sea and lush jungle, with nearby national parks, wildlife reserves, and even quick access to neighboring Panama!
You could easily spend a full day (or more!) simply wandering the colorful streets of Puerto Viejo, discovering local craft shops, boutique shops, art galleries, beach bars, live music, and delicious Caribbean cuisine. Daytime or nighttime gives you plenty to explore!
During our visit, we were lucky to catch an evening event at the town’s main basketball court, La Parada, featuring music and dance. During the day, the same spot is often a hubbub for sports, art, music, and fun as well. We even stumbled across a festival near La Parada with bands, entertainers, and vendors on another evening stroll one day!
Most events are not advertised much, so for up-to-date event info we recommend checking out this public Facebook group.
Important to note: the closer you are to the beach, the higher the prices tend to be – especially for clothing and food. For better deals, venture inland or just outside of the town!
23.) Local Farmers Market

Local farmer’s markets, or Feria in Spanish, are one of the most authentic (and delicious!) ways to explore the region you are in.
Puerto Viejo has a great one for you to check out! Known as the Feria Agrícola y Artesanal de Puerto Viejo (the Agricultural and Artisanal Market of Puerto Viejo), this vibrant market takes place every Saturday and is a great addition to any PV itinerary!
Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, it’s just a joy to walk through the stalls, browse the foods (I bet that you will encounter fruit you never knew existed!), and chat with friendly locals.
But chances are, you will want to buy something! From fresh tropical fruits and veggies to homemade baked goods, cheeses, jams, herbal products, art, jewelry, and more – it’s all fresh, affordable, and made with love. Plus, your purchase supports local families and small-scale farmers in this beautiful Caribbean community!
Check out the official Facebook page here or their Instagram here for current hours, updates, and more!
24.) Enjoy the Beaches

When it comes to beaches, Puerto Viejo is a dream come true! From wild and remote to lively and social, the beaches in this region offer something for every kind of traveler.
Here is an overview of the top beaches in Puerto Viejo and nearby:
- Playa Negra is famous for its dramatic black volcanic sand (I bet you have seen pics of this spot!) and peaceful vibe – perfect for long walks, quiet afternoons, and wave watching.
- Playa Cocles is the go-to beach for surfing, people-watching, and beachy fun. We are talking snorkeling, volleyball, lounge chairs, beach side bars and restaurants, and more. Plenty of fun, local energy here!
- Playa Chiquita is a quieter, hidden gem with tide pools, lush jungle surroundings, and fewer crowds – great for a peaceful or more romantic escape.
- Playa Punta Uva offers calm, clear waters perfect for snorkeling and kayaking. It is one of the most scenic and family-friendly beaches near Puerto Viejo!
- Playa Manzanillo, tucked into the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, is the one for you if you want a feeling of untouched paradise. This beach has dense jungle surroundings, soft sand, and abundant wildlife.
- Playa Blanca in Cahuita National Park is another one just outside of PV that is so worth the trip! It is the perfect spot for monkey spotting and the best beach for snorkeling due to the coral reef located here. Just note that you will need a guide to snorkel here due to reef protection laws!
With all these incredible options so close to one another, beach hopping is one of the best and easiest things to do in Puerto Viejo! You are sure to have a fun day (or several!) ahead of you!
25.) Explore Shipwrecks

One of the most unique and photo-worthy things to do in Puerto Viejo is to hunt for the famous couple of shipwrecks scattered along the coast. These weathered pieces of history make for incredible photography spots, often draped in graffiti, moss, and even full-grown trees!
The most impressive of them all is the large, rusted shipwreck right on the shores of Playa Manzanillo – featured in the photo above!
Closer to Puerto Viejo’s town center, keep an eye out for two smaller wrecks: one is a rusted part of a ship now overtaken by greenery, and the other is a beached boat that has been painted and become a piece of local art.
You’ll find them naturally as you explore Puerto Viejo, or you can search sightseeing points of interest on Google Maps to find the exact locations.
Whether you’re a photographer, artist, or just a curious traveler, these beach side gems are well worth spotting, so grab your camera or phone and have fun exploring!
Bonus: Foodie Thing to do in Puerto Viejo!
As a massive foodie, I just cannot make a list of things to do in Puerto Viejo without at least briefly talking about food!
Puerto Viejo is one of the most delicious spots in Costa Rica, as you get the best of both worlds. The best of the typical Latin, Costa Rican food along with the best of the Afro-Caribbean food!

Here are some must-try foods:
- Rondón – a hearty coconut milk soup often featuring seafood, root veggies, and tons of flavor!
- Caribbean gallo pinto – similar to the usual rice and beans found all over Costa Rica, only cooked with coconut milk and different herbs!
- Patí – A great snack option! A type of empanada, these are spicy, flaky pastries with savory filings.
- Pan Bon – A rich, fruity, and spiced bread often with raisins, molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg, and more! Most commonly found during holidays.

Playa Punta Uva is likely the best option for you. For an active beach day, check out Playa Cocles! The best beaches for getting away from the crowds tend to be Playa Manzanillo or Playa Chiquita.

Q4: What is the Weather Like in Puerto Viejo?
Right on the coast, Puerto Viejo boasts warm, tropical weather year-round, making it a great destination no matter the season.
Average temperatures range from a high of 86°F (30°C) to a low of around 72°F (22°C), meaning you can usually count on hot days and warm nights.
Unlike much of Costa Rica, Puerto Viejo doesn’t follow the country’s usual dry and wet seasons as strictly! Instead, Puerto Viejo has a more unpredictable Caribbean climate, with rainfall more evenly spread throughout the year. That said, September and October tend to be the driest months, while July and November usually see the most rain.
Luckily, even in the wetter months, the showers here are often quite short and very refreshing – you’ll have plenty of sunshine in between!
Q5: When is the Best Time to Visit Puerto Viejo?
No matter when you visit, there are always incredible things to do in Puerto Viejo! The best time to visit just depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.
If you want sunny skies, hot weather, and minimal rain, then the driest months are August, September, and October. You can expect slightly bigger crowds than normal during these months, though!
If you prefer fewer crowds and don’t mind a little bit of rain, then the remaining months – the first half of the year (January-July) and the very end (November and December) – tend to be best.
Surfing is best done January to April here. You’ll get warm water and big swells!
Q6: What Should I Pack for a Trip to Puerto Viejo?
Here are the items that should be in every suitcase when traveling to Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica:
✔ Swim suit – This is perhaps the number one item that should go into your bag for Puerto Viejo. It is a beach town, after all!
✔ Sun protection – Whether that be caps, sunglasses, UV shirts and pants, etc. The sun can be quite harsh here, so plan accordingly!
✔ Natural bug spray and sunscreen – Protect your body and, ideally, the environment too! The last thing we want is to contaminate the coral reefs or dense jungles with our products. Here is a great option for a natural bug spray and here is a great option for a reef-safe, water-resistant, mineral sunscreen.
✔ Rain Gear – A rain jacket, umbrella, or foldable poncho is a must.
✔ Waterproof Shoes – The trails can get muddy and it can rain a lot, so good waterproof shoes / hiking boots are essential!
💡 Tip: our go-to shoes (which we wore everywhere, from the ocean to the rainforest) were these for me and these for Matze. Super comfy, incredibly easy to clean, and very durable. We can highly recommend them!
In addition to the above, we also highly suggest these:
✔ Binoculars – Perfect for birdwatching & spotting wildlife! This small, easy to pack one is a particularly great option!
✔ Snorkeling gear – You can always rent some, but to save some coin and avoid having to use previously used gear, you can always bring some with you! You will certainly get tons of use out of it in this region.
✔ Camera (or at least a good phone) *Ideally waterproof* – You’ll want to capture the magic of Puerto Viejo and, if you have a waterproof camera (like this cheaper one or even a fancy action camera), the magic of the reefs, especially!
✔ Wildlife Field Guide – A Costa Rica nature guide like this one can be tons of help and fun while you explore this region.
Puerto Viejo is so much fun and stuffed with adventure – so pack smart and have fun exploring!
Q7: What Kind of Wildlife Will You See in Puerto Viejo?

If you’re a nature lover, one of the top things to do in Puerto Viejo is wildlife spotting! Puerto Viejo is just bursting with biodiversity.
From colorful birds and cheeky Capuchin monkeys to spaghetti-like snakes, chubby raccoons, fat orb spiders and SO. Much. More.
Seriously, we could write an entire book about all of the animals (and plants!) you can spot in Puerto Viejo.
Costa Rica may make up less than 1% of Earth’s landmass, but it holds nearly 6% of the world’s biodiversity – so no matter where you go or how long you stay, you’re guaranteed to see many wild and wonderful things in Puerto Viejo and all of Costa Rica!
Q8: Is Puerto Viejo Family Friendly?
Yes! If you are looking for family-friendly things to do in Puerto Viejo, you’re in luck – there’s something exciting for every family in Puerto Viejo!
This vibrant Caribbean town is truly an ideal destination for families, especially those with adventurous kids who love animals and the outdoors.
From beautiful beaches and lush nature parks to wildlife encounters and cultural experiences, Puerto Viejo offers plenty of fun for kids of all ages. Many of the tours mentioned above are well suited for families of all sizes and age groups.
In general, Costa Rica’s culture is joyful, welcoming, and family-oriented. Locals genuinely love seeing children explore and enjoy everything the region has to offer and so you are sure to have a great time with your children no matter where you are in the country.
Q9: How to Get to Puerto Viejo?
Here are the top ways to reach Puerto Viejo from your airport or city:
✔ By Rental Car – The easiest and most flexible option! We personally rented from Zuma Rent-a-Car and highly recommend them. Puerto Viejo is about 4 hours from the San José airport and about 9 hours from the Liberia airport (traffic-dependent).
✔ By Shuttle Transport – A stress-free option for those who prefer not to drive. Private and shared shuttles run from popular destinations like San José, Liberia, and other nearby cities. Here is an one from San José, for example!
✔ By Public Bus – The most budget-friendly choice. Long-distance buses connect Puerto Viejo with a handful of major cities, though schedules can be limited so be sure to plan ahead. (It can honestly also be pretty scary driving the curvy, small, and pothole-filled Costa Rican roads in a huge bus!!)
To check for public bus connections in your origin city towards Puerto Viejo, Google is your best friend! 🙂
Q10: How to Get Around Puerto Viejo?

In general, getting around Costa Rica can be tricky without a car, but luckily Puerto Viejo is quite easy to navigate by foot or bike!
Here are the best ways to explore this vibrant Caribbean region:
✔ By Rental Car – in our opinion one of the best options!
We highly recommend renting a car for any trips to Costa Rica. Many areas in towns and cities can be difficult to get to by foot or bike and public transportation can be a bit infrequent and unreliable.
The top benefit of having a car is the freedom it grants you. From easily packing all your beach day supplies, for example, to zipping up to the national park and back in no time at all, and so much more – it is just much more relaxing and time-freeing to have your own car.
As mentioned above, Matze and I used Zuma Rent-a-Car and had an amazing experience! Their team was super helpful and quick to respond.
✔ By Bike – the other best option!
Puerto Viejo is luckily one of the more bike-accessible regions of Costa Rica! You can easily bike all over the town and from beach to beach. If you want to visit Manzanillo or Cahuita you will need to go a little ways (~10-14km – 6.2-8.7 miles). If you are up for it, though, it is a beautiful area to bike around!
✔ By Taxi or Tuk-Tuk
Tuk-tuks and the occasional taxi are generally available all over the region, but be a little cautious – some people have reported many taxi and tuk-tuk services in Costa Rica as scammy. Do a bit of research beforehand – especially about the general route the driver should take. We also suggest agreeing on at least an estimated price upfront.
Uber, while available in other regions of Costa Rica, is not very present in Puerto Viejo, but they are currently expanding!
✔ By Foot – a great option for short trips!
If you plan to stick to exploring only the immediate town of Puerto Viejo and its closest beaches on your trip, then you might not need a car (or bike) at all! The town is small and walkable, and many guided tours include pick-up and transportation.
However, if you want to visit parks on your own schedule or take self-guided day trips or smaller tours, you will need a car or a bike.
