What better place to go zip lining than in Costa Rica’s lush rainforests?

This country is home to some of the best zip line experiences, and if you’re feeling extra adventurous, try a Tarzan swing – a thrilling mix of a swing and a bungee jump!

My husband and I did the 100% Adventure combo tour in Monteverde, which included a Superman zip line and a Tarzan swing – that swing was a top highlight of our entire trip!

02.) White water rafting

For an adrenaline-packed adventure in Costa Rica, white water rafting on the Pacuare River is an absolute must.

Ranked among the best rafting destinations in the entire world, it offers routes for all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned thrill-seekers. Depending on the season and tour type you choose, the rapids can be quite the wild ride!

We chose Exploradores for our tour, and it was the highlight of our month-long honeymoon. The three-hour journey was exhilarating – at one point, I even flew out of the raft, but I came out of the water nearly crying with laughter!

03.) Canyoning

With breathtaking waterfalls all across the country, there’s no better way to experience them and the beauty of Costa Rica than rappelling right down the cascades.

Monteverde and La Fortuna are the top canyoning hot spots. Matthias and I booked the Monteverde Canyoning Tour with Finca Modelo, tackling six waterfalls, including a 131-foot (40-meter) descent!

It was both exhilarating and challenging (having water rush over my face while focusing on breathing and safety was intense), but the expert guides ensure a safe and thrilling experience. If you’re adventurous and at least somewhat athletic, this tour is an absolute must-do in Costa Rica!

04.) Cruising around in ATVs

For a fun way to explore Costa Rica’s beaches, countryside, and rainforests, renting an ATV is one of the best options!

Whether you prefer a leisurely coastal ride or an off-road adrenaline rush, there’s a route for every traveler.

Choose between riding solo, on a two-seater quad, or even a UTV (buggy)! Rentals (without a tour) typically cost $50–$100 per day, and the best way to find one is via Google Maps or TripAdvisor. For info on ATV tours, be sure to check out #37 below!

05.) Snorkeling

A trip to Costa Rica wouldn’t be complete without snorkeling!

With vibrant coral reefs, crystal-clear waters, and incredible marine life, both coasts offer unforgettable underwater adventures. Here is an amazing guide to all of the top snorkeling spots in each region of Costa Rica.

We did a snorkel tour in Cahuita National Park, where the protected waters were teeming with colorful fish and reef life.

Our only regret? Not snorkeling more!

06.) Surfing (or learning how to!)

Costa Rica is a world-class surfing destination, boasting over 1,000 km of Pacific coastline and 200 km on the Caribbean side.

Costa Rica is also home to Pavones Wave, the second-longest left-hand wave in the world, AKA a dream for experienced surfers!

07.) Diving (or getting certified!)

If you’re PADI-certified (or looking to get certified), Costa Rica is an incredible diving destination! With vibrant marine life and countless dive sites, it’s a paradise for underwater explorers.

For a peaceful yet scenic way to explore Costa Rica’s stunning landscapes, kayaking is a fantastic option! With both freshwater and saltwater locations, there are plenty of incredible spots and rentals are relatively affordable and very easy to find in any town.

Some of the most unique experiences include:
– Bioluminescent kayaking (best done with a guided night tour like this one)
– Lake Arenal, offering breathtaking volcano views
– Mangrove kayaking, where you can spot diverse wildlife (see #35 below!)

We kayaked on Lake Arenal and despite some rain we had an amazing time. Once the skies cleared, we enjoyed stunning volcano views and great birdwatching along the shore.

09.) Jet skiing

If you’ve ever ridden a jet ski, you know the thrill – especially on the open ocean!

While watercraft experience helps, there are more gentle ‘beginner’ tours available, including two-person jet skis (where the guide or another experienced rider drives) and/or options that combine snorkeling and island exploration (like this one).

You’ll find rental shops and tours along most beaches. Wherever there is saltwater, there is sure to be jet ski rental shops nearby!

Pro tip: If you rent a jet ski instead of doing a tour, bring snorkel gear (available at most grocery stores to buy or most beachfront stores to rent) and stay on the lookout for exciting (and safe) snorkel spots!

10.) Bungee jumping

Bungee jumping is one of those life-changing experiences that you will never forget about or stop talking about!

Costa Rica is a top spot for adrenaline seeks in this regard, as it boasts Central America’s highest bungee platform at Extremo Park, standing at nearly 450 ft (150m) high with a freefall of over 250 ft (80m). You can book that tour here!

There’s nothing quite like seeing this diverse country from the sky, with all of the lush rainforests, coastline, and mountains stretching below you.

17.) Climbing Ficus trees

Beyond its amazing wildlife, Costa Rica is home to incredible plant life, including the towering Giant Ficus tree, also known as the Strangler Fig. A tree that starts its life in the crevice of another tree, slowly growing around it until the host tree decays and disappears, leaving behind a hollow center.

The best part? You can often climb inside these natural wonders!

18.) Night tours

This is an absolute must–do for anyone visiting Costa Rica. Seriously. If you do only one tour in Costa Rica, make it a night tour!

The amount of wildlife you’ll encounter after dark in Costa Rica is just incredible. Here is just a quick overview of some of the wildlife you will likely see on these tours:
– Spiders – Tarantulas, neon-colored species, and more
– Scorpions – They glow under UV light!
– Snakes – Including the infamous Fer-de-Lance
– Frogs & Toads – Red-eyed tree frogs, teeny tiny guys, “denim pants” frog, etc
– Hummingbirds – They sleep at night!
– Kinkajous – Quirky little mammals that, if you are very lucky, you might see in the trees above you!

Top locations include Monteverde, La Fortuna, Drake Bay, and Manuel Antonio. If you are heading somewhere else, just search for your destination city on Viator with the term ‘night walk tour’ and you’ll be sure to find a great option.

The Manzanillo night tour near Puerto Viejo with Jan was our top experience on any tour during our month stay in Costa Rica. In just over three hours, we saw more wildlife than on any of the other three night tours we did. We highly, highly recommend Jan and his tours!

19.) Birdwatching tours

I’ll be honest, I was not super into birds before our Costa Rica trip. Boy am I now!

Costa Rica is a paradise for birdwatching, with incredible species everywhere – from nature parks to city streets and even hotel balconies.

A major highlight is the Resplendent Quetzal, a rare and stunning bird that draws birders from around the world.

Pro tip: many tours provide shared binoculars, but this will actually lead to you missing a lot. We ended up buying binoculars (way overpriced!) just a few days into our trip and we used them all day, every day. Don’t make our mistake, bring some from home with you!

20.) Fishing tour

Fishing in Costa Rica is a must for all of you anglers! Matthias’ half-day fishing tour was the highlight of his trip – just look at that catch!

You can go all out with a full-day deep–sea charter, opt a half-day shared tour (like we did), or go for a budget–friendly trip with a local fisherman. Even though I did not partake in any fishing, I still had a blast spotting dolphins, sea turtles (pro tip: they look like floating driftwood or rocks so keep your eyes peeled!) flying fish, and even a whale!

And the best part? If you catch a fish you are allowed to keep, most restaurants along the coastline will cook it up for you right then and there! Freshest. Meal. Ever.

If you’re in Tamarindo, check out this top-rated fishing tour. If you’re headed elsewhere or on a budget, search “fishing tours” on Google or Viator or just walk the beach – locals are always offering deals.

We personally went with Quepos Fish Adventure, and while it was a bit pricey, it was a solid choice.

Pro tip: Ask about shared group tours for a better price or team up with fellow travelers to split the cost!

21.) San Jose bike tour

San José gets a bit of a bad rap, but skipping it would be a mistake!

We heard from so many people to head straight to the coast or Monteverde, but honestly, exploring the city was a big highlight for us! There’s so much to see, and one of the best ways to experience it all in a short time? A bike tour!

This 5-star “Bites and Bikes” tour is the ultimate way to explore San José – cruising past top attractions and indulging in amazing local eats like empanadas and Costa Rican coffee (my mouth is watering while writing this).

22.) San Jose walking food tour

Not a fan of biking? No problem! (I’m not either). A walking tour is just as fun – especially when food is involved. I mean come on, what’s is better than sightseeing and snacking at the same time??

I always book a food tour in every city I visit, and the Bites and Sights Walking Tour in San José did not disappoint! Our guide was so knowledgeable, we explored stunning sights, and the best part? We got to eat many different types of local dishes and fruit and we even made some of our own food at the end. Such a unique and memorable experience!

But if food tours aren’t your thing, don’t worry! There are tons of fantastic walking tours all over San José (and throughout all of Costa Rica) to explore as well.

23.) Irazu volcano tour

Time to explore Costa Rica’s incredible volcanoes, starting with Irazú, the country’s tallest!

With epic views, scenic drives to get there, and fewer crowds than some of the other volcanoes, Irazú is a fantastic stop. The only catch? It’s often cloudy, and the crater lake at the top sometimes dries up. But when it’s full, the brilliant teal water is absolutely breathtaking (and makes for a stunning photo)!

Since Irazú is close to San José, it’s perfect for a half-day or full-day tour, often paired with other nearby attractions.

24.) Arenal volcano tour

Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna is Costa Rica’s most famous volcano – and for good reason!

This perfectly conical volcano is surrounded by lush jungle, abundant wildlife, and some of the best natural hot springs in the world (seriously, they feel amazing).

Pro tip: the Arenal Volcano National Park trails are surprisingly quiet, despite the overall region being very busy! While you can’t hike to the summit (anymore), the trails bring you close enough for jaw-dropping views and epic photos.

25.) Rincon de la Vieja volcano tour

Rincón de la Vieja Volcano in the Guanacaste region is an adventure lover’s paradise, featuring four stunning waterfalls, bubbling mud pots, hot springs, and incredible hiking trails ranging from easy walks to challenging treks.

While hiking to the crater is currently off-limits (this active volcano last erupted in March 2024!), the national park still offers plenty to explore.

26.) Poas volcano tour

Poás Volcano, another one of Costa Rica’s breathtaking volcanoes, just a short trip from San José is perfect for a half or full-day adventure.

What makes Poás special? Its massive crater, the second largest in the world, filled with the most incredible turquoise water.

While it’s smaller and more compact than Arenal or Rincón de la Vieja, it’s more visited than Irazú, meaning you’ll likely encounter some crowds. That said, if you go early in the morning or on a weekday, you’ll get the unforgettable views without much of the rush.

27.) Guided national park tours

Costa Rica’s many national parks are wildlife havens, perfect for jungle adventures and spotting incredible animals.

While you can definitely explore solo (do not let the swindlers directly outside of parks force you in getting a guide!), a pre-booked guided tour can enhance your experience by helping you spot more animals, learn fascinating facts, and navigate the park efficiently.

Guides know exactly where to find sleeping sloths, hidden frogs, groups of monkeys, resplendent birds (any birdwatchers here? See what I did there?? Haha), and more. Plus, they’ll share local insights, travel tips, and even fun survival tricks – like which plants are safe to eat!

There is no shortage of waterfalls around Costa Rica and , as such, no shortage of waterfall tours! Whether you’re up north, down south, or anywhere in between, there’s bound to be a waterfall nearby waiting to be explored.

Ever dreamed of horseback riding through the rainforest or along a beach? Costa Rica is the perfect place to make it happen!

During our time in Costa Rica, we saw so many incredible horseback tours – from sunset beach rides to gallops through jungle trails. We tried to book one last minute (even though I am a bit… hesitant about horses, haha), but everything was full! Lesson learned: book your tour in advance.

Sailing in Costa Rica is an absolute dream! Our top recommendation? Booking a sunset tour.

It’s peaceful, relaxing, and incredibly romantic. Plus, Costa Rica’s sunsets are out of this world!

As you cruise, you might spot dolphins, sea turtles, or even whales, and many tours include delicious meals or snacks. Some sailing tours might even offer paddleboards, kayaks, and/or snorkeling gear for a little extra adventure during your sailing trip!

Matthias and I took an ATV tour in Quepos/Manuel Antonio, where we rode through palm plantations, crossed rivers, tackled muddy and rocky roads, and swam in a waterfall during a break.

We each had our own quad and wished desperately that we could race, but tours go at a speed comfortable for everyone (i.e you will only go as fast as the slowest rider). That said, we still managed to get up to 60+ km/h sometimes and even did some light drifting – SO fun!

38.) BriBri chocolate and culture tour

If you want to dive deeper into Costa Rica’s history, culture, and indigenous traditions, this tour is a great choice!

In Limon, near Puerto Viejo, you can find several half-day tours where you’ll meet a BriBri indigenous family, learn about their way of life, their use of medicinal plants, and their tradition of chocolate making (which is deeply connected to their culture).

You’ll see the chocolate-making process firsthand and sometimes even get the chance to make your own! (Though for our recommended chocolate making class, check out #68 below!)

41.) Waterfall tours

From towering cascades in the rainforest to hidden gems in the mountains, you have plenty of options to visit waterfalls in Costa Rica!

While some are easy to explore on your own (and in fact, we recommend saving money on all the short walks and small ones!), the bigger and more famous waterfalls like La Fortuna, Rio Celeste, Bajos del Toro, and Nauyaca, are more intensive and best visited with a guide.

42.) Hiking tours

If you love exploring on foot and want a more active way to experience Costa Rica, hiking tours are an incredible option!

Guides have a trained eye for spotting wildlife you’d very likely miss on your own, and their deep knowledge of the region makes the experience even more enriching. They’ll share fascinating insights about the flora, fauna, and even the best local spots to eat and explore.

No worries if you are not looking for a challenging trek – there are slow, nature focused hikes as well!

Here are some of the best hiking tours in Costa Rica to help you make the most of your adventure!

43.) Tortuguero tours

Tortuguero, a small village on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, is a must-visit for wildlife lovers, especially those eager to witness sea turtles in their natural habitat.

This protected region is a prime nesting ground for Green, Hawksbill, and Leatherback sea turtles, offering the chance to see them laying eggs or to watch baby turtles hatch and make their way to the ocean.

Since much of Tortuguero is off-limits after 6 PM without a guide (this is when turtles are most active) booking a tour is essential if you are interested in these animals. Here are some top-rated turtles tours in Tortuguero. (P.S – check out #62 below for another turtle tour option!)

44.) Catch the sunset / sunrise

Sunsets and sunrises over water are always breathtaking, but in Costa Rica, they’re on another level.

The sky lights up with vibrant colors, making for some of the most stunning natural displays you’ll ever see. (Seriously, my camera roll was like 25% sunsets when we left Costa Rica).

For the best sunset views, head straight to the beach! The colors reflecting off the water are just magical.

For sunrise, a higher vantage point, like a hiking trail or national park overlook, makes the experience even more special. Check for nearby trails or national parks with early openings to catch the perfect morning view!

Pro tip: keep in mind that the sun rises and sets early here, so plan accordingly. Coming from Germany during the summer, where sunset is closer to 10 PM, we completely missed it happening at 5pm our first few nights!

45.) Chill at the beach(es)

Costa Rica is renowned for its stunning beaches – after all, its name literally means “Rich Coast” in Spanish!

Whether you’re looking for white sand, black sand, Caribbean vibes, or Pacific waves, there’s a beach for everyone. From small, laid-back beach towns to bustling coastal cities, every region in Costa Rica offers something special and unique. No two spots are the same!

Beyond soaking in the beauty, the ocean is perfect for adventure. Surfing, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and more await.

46.) Visit the FREE hot springs

One of the top attractions in Costa Rica are their hot springs, thanks to the country’s many volcanoes. While many are located in high-end resorts that charge steep entrance fees, there’s a budget-friendly hot springs alternative – the FREE ‘El Choyin’ hot spring near La Fortuna!

Resort hot springs offer full-day access with amenities like restrooms, lockers, and bars, making them a great choice if you’re looking for comfort. However, if you’d rather save money or just want a quick dip, this free one is a great option.

The only potential cost is parking. This varies between 1,000-5,000+ colones. Keep in mind that you technically do not need to pay the ‘parking attendant’ anything at all – they are not legal or official and it is considered by some as a form of scamming.

However we always paid around 1,000 colones to ensure they keep an eye on our car, to be able to park very close, and because we just didn’t personally feel right not paying when we could afford it anyway.

Tip: you can always barter the price! Don’t be afraid to negotiate.

You can also just park further away where there is no attendant for free, though break-ins are not too uncommon so park wisely and leave nothing valuable in the car.

Expect a lively atmosphere in the afternoons and evenings, especially on weekends. It can get quite busy as the day goes on! For a quieter experience, visit during the week around midday. When we went mid-week in August, we enjoyed a peaceful soak that lasted until sunset, with locals lighting candles around the springs as the sun went down. The ambiance was unforgettable!

(And speaking of locals – many come here to relax because they cannot afford the tourist hot spots with their high prices. Please be respectful and kind!! You are a visitor and this is their home)

47.) Hang out at a festival

Costa Rica is bursting with vibrant culture, and its festivals are some of the most fun and memorable experiences you can have while visiting.

In late July, the Annexation of Guanacaste brings vibrant celebrations with carnivals, parades, traditional dances, and mouthwatering street food. If you’re visiting in December, don’t miss the Festival de la Luz in San José, where dazzling floats, live music, fireworks, and energetic performances light up the city.

Beyond these, Costa Rica hosts countless other incredible festivals throughout the year.

48.) Go nature exploring

Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, home to a whopping 6% of the world’s total species!

No matter where you are, a simple walk can turn into an incredible wildlife-spotting adventure.

For the best experience, here are our top tips:

• Go early in the morning (or take a night walk if you’re feeling adventurous!)
• Stick to legal, public trails (many areas in Costa Rica are protected and you are not allowed to walk there)
• Move as quietly as possible to increase your chances of spotting animals
• Bring a camera, binoculars, and a field guide to help identify what you see
• Sturdy shoes, eco-friendly bug spray, and a good rain jacket / poncho are must-haves, as terrain can be rugged, insects are plentiful, and sudden downpours happen often and unexpectedly.

Most importantly, admire wildlife from a distance – no touching or feeding! Keep nature wild and enjoy every moment of your walk.

49.) Go hiking

For those craving more than just a leisurely walk, Costa Rica offers incredible hiking opportunities that immerse you into the country’s raw nature.

Even just a short 20-minute trek can reveal an astonishing variety of plants and wildlife, let alone all of the longer trails! The longer you hike and the more into the heart of Costa Rica you wander, the more you will see and learn.

From volcano treks to waterfall trails, secluded jungle paths to popular national park routes, there’s a perfect hike for every fitness level and travel style.

50.) Climb a ficus tree

Near Santa Elena in Monteverde, you’ll find the incredible and famous Ficus La Raiz, also known as Puente Raiz – a natural ficus tree bridge that’s a must-see for nature lovers.

The journey to this spot is just as magical as the destination, with lush rainforest surroundings making for a truly enchanting experience. If you’re in the area or passing through, it’s well worth a visit.

As of 2025 it remains free to explore, though small donations to the landowner are appreciated for upkeep.

51.) Chill at swimming holes and waterfalls

As we have already talked about above, Costa Rica is home to countless waterfalls! Many of which have inviting swimming holes where you can take a refreshing dip.

Before heading out, check if there are entrance fees (some places are cash-only) and what the hike to the falls entails. Some require a longer, more challenging trek (great for spotting wildlife!), while others are easily accessible for a quick and relaxing visit.

Some waterfalls offer a serene, secluded experience, while others, like La Fortuna or Rio Celeste, can be packed, especially during peak season (Dec-Apr). Arriving early can help you beat the rush, but for the most popular spots, expect some company no matter the time of day.

52.) Walk around downtown

Costa Rica’s towns and cities each have their own unique vibe, and exploring their downtown areas can be tons of fun!

Whether you’re looking for live music, vibrant street art, delicious food stalls, or eclectic shops, there’s certainly a spot for you.

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca stands out for its laid-back Caribbean atmosphere, with music and energy filling the streets day and night. (This was our personal favorite!)

If you’re drawn to artsy boutiques and charming shops, Santa Elena near Monteverde might be more your style.

For those who love thrifting and shopping near the beach, Quepos is a perfect fit.

Each town – whether it’s La Fortuna, Jaco, Tortuguero, or beyond – has its own character and charm. Wandering through these different areas was one of our favorite parts of our road trip, as every stop felt like a new adventure!

53.) Visit a farmers market

Farmers markets, or feria, are the best way to experience the country’s incredible fresh food scene.

From just-caught seafood to perfectly ripe tropical fruit, homemade meals, refreshing drinks, and even unique ice cream flavors, these markets are full of delicious surprises – all at great prices!

If you’re eager to expand your taste palate, feria are the best way to do it. When we visited the San José market, Matthias and I discovered fruits we had never even heard of before and indulged in countless flavors of empanadas, ice creams, and local snacks. They had to roll us out of the market we were so stuffed, haha.

The largest and most popular farmers markets are found in bigger cities and towns like San José, San Isidro de El General, Tamarindo, and Turrialba. Here is a guide from My Tan Feet to some of the best options!

Nature

54.) Check out crocodiles at Tarcoles Bridge

If you’re driving along the Pacific coast or passing through Jaco, make sure to stop at the Tarcoles Bridge for a fun, unique roadside stop you won’t forget!

This bridge spans the Tarcoles River, home to the world’s highest concentration of American crocodiles.

With over 2,000 crocs in the river (roughly 50 per square kilometer) – some reaching up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) long, you’re guaranteed to see these massive reptiles basking on the riverbanks or floating just below the surface.

The bridge is easy to access by car, with plenty of parking on the bridge directly. Check out this article about the bridge, with directions to get there, plus some great tips.

55.) Go to Angelina’s Tropical Garden in La Fortuna

If you’re in La Fortuna and looking for a peaceful, nature-filled escape, this stunning garden is a must-visit – and it’s completely free!

While there’s no entrance fee, donations for upkeep are highly encouraged, though. It’s clear how much care and effort goes into maintaining this beautiful space so we do suggest bringing any spare change to donate if you are in the area!

The garden is home to thousands of plant species, which in turn attract an incredible variety of wildlife. We spotted the cutest chubby bumblebees, vibrantly colored butterflies, and even grasshoppers as big as a fist! There are also fun features like scenic towers, archways, and even a small hedge maze to explore.

Beyond the lush greenery, the view of Arenal Volcano from the gardens is breathtaking. Whether you’re a plant lover or just looking for a serene spot to unwind, this hidden gem in La Fortuna is well worth a visit!

56.) Visit the national parks

Visiting Costa Rica without stepping into at least one national park? What a massive shame that would be!

These protected areas are bursting with biodiversity, offering incredible wildlife sightings, scenic trails, beaches, and even snorkeling spots.

You can explore on your own for a more private and flexible adventure, whether that means taking a swim, snapping endless photos, or just quietly observing the wildlife.

But if you want to maximize your sightings, a guided tour is the way to go! Expert guides can spot hidden animals, share fascinating insights, and even provide binoculars or telescopes for a closer look. Plus, you’ll get great local tips and recommendations! (Check out #27 above for more on guided tours!)

57.) Visit a butterfly conservatory

Costa Rica is a butterfly paradise, home to around 1,250 species – over 10% of the entire world’s total!

Because of this, butterfly conservatories are found all over the country, offering an up close look at these stunning creatures while highlighting their life cycles and conservation efforts.

Our personal favorite was in El Castillo near Monteverde, where they focus on rainforest regeneration alongside butterfly conservation. Many conservatories also feature frogs and other small insects, making them even more fun!

If you’re interested in heading to one, just search “butterfly conservatory” + your location, and you’re bound to find an amazing spot nearby!

58.) Visit a frog conservatory

Frog conservatories are another fantastic wildlife experience in Costa Rica, offering a chance to see rare species like red-eyed tree frogs, poison dart frogs, and glass frogs, and more up close.

Our favorite was the Ranario in Monteverde, where booking a tour gives you two visits – one during the day and one at night. The nighttime visit turns into an exciting “find the frog” adventure with flashlights! Check out their website here for more info!

To find a different frog conservatory near you, just search “frog conservatory” + your location. If possible, try visiting both during the day and at night, as different species are active at different times. This will give you the full experience!

59.) Visit the Sloth Sanctuary in Cahuita

If you love sloths, a visit to a sloth rescue center in Costa Rica is a must!

These sanctuaries allow you to see and learn about rescued sloths, many of whom have suffered injuries from dog attacks, car accidents, or falling onto power lines. While it’s heartbreaking to hear their stories, it’s also incredibly heartwarming to see them getting the care they need.

There are two tour options at this sanctuary in Cahuita:
– The “Buttercup Tour” – A 1 hour long tour where you can meet several sloths and learn all about them. The price is 28 USD as of 2025. (We did this and loved it!)
– The “Insider Tour” – A 2 hour long behind-the-scenes experience that even takes you into the NICU, where baby sloths are cared for! However, this exclusive tour is more than five times the price of the regular tour, at 150 USD as of 2025, so it is a splurge.

P.S. If you’re looking for a place to stay nearby, they also own a small inn called “Buttercup Inn“. It’s a simple, cozy spot – not right in the city, but if you have a rental car, it could be a fun accommodation option!

60.) Visit an animal rescue center

If you’re looking for a wildlife rescue center beyond the Sloth Sanctuary, there are plenty of great options!

One of the most popular is the Jaguar Rescue Center near Cahuita and Puerto Viejo. Despite its name, it usually doesn’t house jaguars, but you’ll see plenty of other rescued wildlife. The 1.5-hour tour is also a great deal at just under $30 per person (as of 2025).

61.) Go to the Bat Jungle near Monteverde

If you’re a bat lover (like I am!) or even just curious about these fascinating creatures, The Bat Jungle in Monteverde is a must-visit. It made for one of the most fun and unique pit stops on our road trip from La Fortuna to Monteverde!

This small, hidden gem offers 45-minute tours packed with fascinating insights about nearly 100 bats from 8 species.

We unfortunately happened to visit when there was no tour running, but we still had a blast exploring the exhibit, reading plaques, playing with interactive displays, and picking up souvenirs (including my favorite mug to this day!).

62.) Check out the sea turtles at Ostional Wildlife Reserve

We’ve talked so much about Costa Rica’s amazing wildlife, but we can’t forget about sea turtles. If Tortuguero (mentioned above within #43) is too far or tricky to get to, the Ostional Wildlife Reserve in Guanacaste offers an easier way to see sea turtles.

From August to November, thousands of Olive Ridley turtles, along with the occasional leatherback or green sea turtle, arrive on this 200 acre protected reserve to lay nearly ten million eggs. Roughly 1-2 months later, the beach comes alive as baby turtles hatch and race to the ocean.

You can visit for free during the day, but at night during hatching season, there is an entry fee. Most turtles arrive after eight in the evening when the beach is darkest, so paying this fee to enter at night and getting a guide is highly recommended!

63.) Take a guided walk in the Selva Verde Reserve

Selva Verde Reserve in Sarapiquí is a hidden gem for nature lovers, offering an immersive wildlife experience on a lush 500-acre private property.

Part of the Selva Verde Lodge, this eco-lodge north of San José welcomes both overnight guests and day visitors. One of its best activities is a guided nature walk through their private rainforest where expert guides help you spot Costa Rica’s incredible wildlife.

Since it’s less crowded than national parks, it really feels like an exclusive, off-the-beaten-path adventure. Learn more about the lodge and their various experiences here!

64.) Check out the Whale Tail (and real life whales!) in Uvita

The Uvita Whale Tail is one of Costa Rica’s most unique natural wonders – a sandbar and reef formation that remarkably resembles a whale’s tail.

Located in Marino Ballena National Park, this “Whale Park” is also a prime spot for humpback whale migrations from July to September and December to March.

For the best experience, visit during low tide to walk the Whale Tail (binoculars in hand!) and scan the horizon for breaching whales. Or you could hop on a boat tour, instead (see #33 above), for a closer view!

Beyond the Whale Tail, the park boasts vast, uncrowded beaches perfect for relaxing in the sun. Even during Costa Rica’s high season, you’ll find space to unwind, swim, and soak in the breathtaking coastal scenery.

65.) Visit Caño Negro Wildlife Reserve

Caño Negro is a wildlife lover’s paradise and one of the most important wetlands in the world.

Located in north-central Costa Rica, this 25,000-acre reserve is unbelievably rich in biodiversity with over 300 bird species, rare fish, and incredible land animals like jaguars, ocelots, various species of monkey and so much more.

Whether you explore on your own or take a guided boat tour, you’ll be surrounded by raw, untouched nature, allowing for countless opportunities for wildlife spotting.

66.) Hike Cerro Amigos in Monteverde or catch sunset at Cerro Plano

For an easy, beautiful, and free view of sunrise and sunset in Monteverde, head to the Cerro Plano viewpoint (also called Mirador Valle Escondido Preserve).

On a clear day, you’ll get a breathtaking panoramic view of the Gulf of Nicoya in the distance.

For an even more stunning viewpoint, hike up Cerro Amigos, the highest point in Monteverde at 6,069 feet (1,850m). The 2.5-mile (4km) trek is steep, but rewarding, offering even better panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Just be sure to check the weather beforehand – this climb is best tackled on a dry day!

67.) Watch hummingbirds at Hummingbird Gardens

Costa Rica is home to 53 hummingbird species – an impressive 1/5 of the entire world’s total! While you’ll likely spot some naturally, these three top locations offer incredible up close encounters:

Rancho Naturalista (near Turrialba Volcano) is a top birdwatching lodge with 450+ recorded species. Even if you’re not staying overnight, you can visit with a day pass to join a birding tour or even dine at their outdoor restaurant.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens features scenic trails, five different waterfalls, animal enclosures, various restaurants, and a hummingbird garden where a whopping 26 species have been recorded – perfect for close-up photography.

For a free, easy stop, the Monteverde Hummingbird Gallery (right outside Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve) has feeders attracting plenty of hummingbirds and other wildlife!

68.) Make chocolate in Puerto Viejo

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is one of the best spots in Costa Rica to learn about and make your own chocolate!

The country has a deep history with both chocolate and coffee, and a great tour lets you experience the entire process hands-on.

Matthias and I took an incredible choco tour where we walked a small farm, saw cacao trees up close, and tasted every stage of chocolate-making – including tasting fresh cacao fruit (shockingly delicious!).

With all the steps prepped for us, we got to grind beans by hand, winnow, temper, pour chocolate into molds, and even drink fresh chocolate drinks. At the end, we took home handmade chocolate and a bag of cocoa nibs.

If you’re in the area, we highly recommend the tour we took – it’s fun, interactive, and you get to take home delicious handmade treats!

P.S – this spot also has the cutest pets! Dogs, cats, chickens, etc. The best part is that their rooster will sometimes walk into the main room (which has great acoustics), scream out a cock-a-doodle-doo just to hear it echo, and then strut away again, haha.

69.) Have a San Lucas Treetop Dining Experience in Monteverde

Ranked among the top 20 most romantic restaurants in the world, this one-of-a-kind dining experience is just magical.

Choose between a 9-course or 6-course tasting menu, each thoughtfully designed to tell an interactive story through Costa Rica’s rich flavors and culinary traditions.

What truly sets this experience apart, though, is the setting – private glass-enclosed dining pods suspended in the Monteverde cloud forest. With breathtaking views of the Gulf of Nicoya, it’s is certainly one of the most beautiful places within Costa Rica to dine.

While it’s definitely a splurge and the portions do fall on the small side, the unforgettable ambiance, incredible flavors, and intimate atmosphere make it worth it. A dining experience this extraordinary more than earns its title as one of the world’s most romantic restaurants!

70.) Drink out of a coconut on the beach

Nothing says paradise quite like sipping fresh coconut water while soaking up the sun on a Costa Rican beach.

All along the coast, you’ll find friendly local vendors strolling the sand, offering freshly cut coconuts. With a chop or two they’ll open one right before you, and many will even carve a small spoon from the husk so you can scoop out the delicious coconut flesh once you’ve finished drinking!

It’s simple, refreshing, and there’s just something about enjoying fresh coconut right on the beach that makes it taste even better.

Be sure to try this at least once while in Costa Rica – you won’t regret it!

71.) Enjoy copos!

Not a fan of coconuts but still want to try a classic Costa Rican treat? Then you have to try a copo!

These refreshing cups of shaved ice are sweetened with condensed milk, flavored syrups, and sometimes topped with fresh fruit or other tasty additions. They’re a cheap, delicious, and traditional frozen dessert that both locals and visitors love.

You’ll find copos vendors in most cities – just keep an eye out for small, wheeled carts and be sure to bring cash.

72.) Buy and try some rambutan

If you love tropical fruit, you can’t miss out on rambutan!

This vibrant, spiky fruit looks almost alien-like, but inside it’s bursting with sweet, mildly tart, and incredibly juicy goodness – very similar to lychee or grapes.

Rambutan is a staple snack in Costa Rica, and you’ll find vendors selling big bags of them on street corners (often out of their car trunks!), at markets, and in most grocery stores.

Just crack open the hairy red shell and enjoy! It’s the perfect refreshing and delicious treat to keep you cool in the tropical heat.

73.) Enjoy a Shirley Temple with a view

If you’ve never had a Shirley Temple, you’re seriously missing out!

This sweet, fizzy non-alcoholic drink is traditionally made with ginger ale, a splash of grenadine, and topped with a maraschino cherry – yes, it’s just as delicious as it sounds! (I am a little obsessed, haha).

While it’s very hard to find outside the U.S., Costa Rica is one of the rare places where you can order it at most restaurants!

The perfect way to end any day is to grab this drink (or any fun drink!), kick back, and soak in that Costa Rican sunshine and pura vida vibes.

74.) Enjoy gallo pinto with salsa Lizano

Oh, gallo pinto, you have my whole heart.

There’s no better way to start the day than with a hearty plate of this classic Costa Rican dish – a delicious mix of rice, beans, chopped veggies, and the magic ingredient: Salsa Lizano. This tangy, slightly sweet sauce ties it all together, making each bite absolutely irresistible.

Every morning in Costa Rica, Matthias and I would dig into gallo pinto with a side of eggs, cheese, or ham, and honestly, we both still dream about it. If you’re in Costa Rica, do yourself a favor and try gallo pinto at least once – but trust me, once won’t be enough!

Our top spot for gallo pinto? Soda el Angel near Quepos – a hidden gem that’s cheap, quick, and insanely delicious (more on it below at #81).

75.) Enjoy a fresh smoothie

If you think plain fresh fruit in Costa Rica is amazing, just wait until you try the smoothies!

Just about every café and restaurant offers them, and honestly, I don’t think we had a single bad one. Is it even possible in Costa Rica to have a bad smoothie?!

The fruit is so fresh, so ripe, and so naturally sweet, it makes every sip mouthwateringly delicious.

Our favorite place to grab a smoothie? Right on the beach! There’s nothing better than escaping the heat for a moment, sipping on what I’ll bet will be one of the most refreshing drinks of your life, and then heading back out for more fun in the sun.

76.) Eat some fresh seafood

Costa Rica’s fresh seafood is next level and even though I never tried any (I don’t eat seafood), Matthias swears it’s some of the most tender, flavorful fish he’s ever had.

The best part? It’s so easy to find fresh seafood no matter where you are in Costa Rica!

If you are lucky enough to be staying in a beach town, do yourself a favor – take a stroll, pick a random seaside restaurant (maybe the one that smells the best as you walk by or has the most joyful customers!), and dive in. Enjoy the views and the food!

You truly can’t go wrong with Costa Rican food. Even the most unassuming spot will likely serve up something seriously delicious!

77.) Check out El Refugio Grill in Puerto Viejo

Not a seafood fan? Same here! No worries – Costa Rica has plenty of amazing options for meat and veggies, like El Refugio Grill in Puerto Viejo.

This hidden gem is tucked away in a pocket of rainforest, offering a cozy, magical atmosphere perfect for a memorable meal (and especially for a romantic meal!).

78.) Enjoy an amazing view at Ronny’s Place in Quepos

Ronny’s Place in Quepos has it all!

Fresh and flavorful seafood, juicy grilled meats, perfectly ripe fruits and veggies, and, best of all, a breathtaking view.

Matthias and I loved it so much we went twice – once on a rainy, foggy day and once during a clear, colorful sunset. Both times, the ambiance was incredible, proving that rain or shine, this place is just sublime.

79.) Check out the Mercadito Arenal in La Fortuna for variety!

Perfect for groups and families, this food hall-style market lets everyone pick exactly what they’re craving at that moment.

With some of La Fortuna’s best tacos, incredible cocktails, sushi, pizza, burgers, and more, even the pickiest of eaters will leave happy.

You can dine in the center of the market or (what we suggest) you can take your meal to one of the nearby parks or gardens. You can see the Arenal Volcano from most spots in La Fortuna, giving you a stunning view while you eat!

80.) Enjoy the best burritos & shakes at La Ventanita near La Fortuna

La Ventanita may be way off the beaten path, but trust us – it’s worth every wrong turn (and boy did we have some seriously wrong turns… pro tip: use Waze, never Google Maps!).

After 30+ minutes of searching, we finally arrived, and from the first sip of our smoothies to the last bite of our burritos, we were in love.

Beyond the incredible food, this place has tons of character. It is small but just packed with personality, plus it has the most amazing view of Arenal Volcano and lake.

81.) Enjoy the best breakfast at Soda el Angel in Quepos

After 30+ days road-tripping across Costa Rica and trying countless sodas, we can confidently say Soda El Angel was our absolute favorite.

For those new to Costa Rica, a soda is a small, local eatery serving up affordable, traditional, and, especially in the case of this hidden gem, insanely delicious food.

We ate here 8 times in the 7 days we were in Quepos and still regret not going more, haha. Every time I make breakfast at home, I wish I could magically teleport back to this spot.

The prices at Soda El Angel are great, the food is fast and fresh, and it’s so simple yet so, so good. Don’t miss out on this hidden gem! Check it out here.

82.) Try fried ice cream & freshly brewed beer at the Monteverde Brewing Company

While craft breweries and fried ice cream aren’t exactly unique to Costa Rica, this spot is so much fun that we just have to recommend checking it out!

Even if you’re not a beer fan (neither of us are actually!), the friendly, open, and very lively atmosphere makes for a great time, every time.

But if you do love beer, you should be very happy with their selection of local brews!

The real bucket-list item here, though? Fried ice cream! Just a heads up it’s massive, so you’ll definitely want to split it with a friend.

83.) Visit the Guayabo National Monument

History buffs, this one’s for us!

Guayabo National Monument in Turrialba is Costa Rica’s most important archaeological site, featuring pre-Hispanic ruins dating back to 1000 BC – 1400 AD!

Spread across 20 hectares of protected land, this site has even earned recognition as a World Heritage in Civil Engineering.

It is a fascinating glimpse into Costa Rica’s past and if you love history, architecture, or ancient civilizations, this site a must-visit!

84.) Head to Parque Diversiones in San José (a charitable amusement park)!

If you’re looking for a fun day out with the family, Parque Diversiones in San José is a great choice – especially for those traveling with younger kids!

While it’s not a huge theme park (think local charm vs. Disney-sized thrills), it offers a decent variety of rides, activities, food, and entertainment for a budget–friendly adventure.

One of the best parts? A portion of the park’s profits go towards supporting the local children’s hospital, making it a beloved spot among locals and a good place to support.

Just keep in mind that it’s more of a local gem, so knowing a bit of Spanish will be very helpful, as there is little English spoken or shown on signage.

85.) Visit the Maleku Tribe and enjoy some Chicha

Kapi Kapi! (Hello! in Maleku Jaika)

The Maleku Tribe is the smallest indigenous tribe in Costa Rica, with just over 600 people remaining. Deeply connected to the rainforest, they work to promote reforestation and to preserve their traditions, language, and way of life.

One of the highlights of our Costa Rica trip was visiting a Maleku village, where we got to chat with the community, learn their history, and experience their customs firsthand.

Sipping on a traditional gourd of Chicha, an indigenous corn beer, while listening to stories passed down for generations was such a unique and special experience!

If you’re interested in visiting and supporting the Maleku Tribe, book a tour here or within many day tours (see #40 above), or learn more from their official site. Their culture, language, and traditions are at risk, so any support helps to preserve their heritage!

Be careful to find tours that support the tribe directly and their reforestation goals! Not tours that appear to be taking advantage of the tribe and/or tricking tourists with fake tribes. Research well and read reviews!

86.) Go thrifting

Love thrifting? You’re in luck! “Americanos” (thrift stores) are everywhere in Costa Rica, from big cities to small towns.

While they rarely have websites or even appear on maps, just keep an eye out for the term “Americano” in store signs or windows as you explore. The more you walk, the more you’ll find!

We were shocked by the variety in most Americanos. From winter coats (who expected that in Costa Rica?!) to swimsuits, hiking gear, formal wear, everyday essentials, and more.

Whether you forgot to pack something or just love a good thrift find, these shops are a literal goldmine of affordable, decently high-quality, treasures.

This unique treehouse home is tucked away in the forest alongside a couple of other charming, character-filled homes – each offering privacy, seclusion, and a front-row seat to nature.

Being up in the trees, you get tons of wildlife right at your door. We were woken up once by howler monkeys swinging by and playing on our tin roof! (Which, by the way, makes the most beautiful noise when it rains!!)

91.) Enjoy a massage at the beach (for couples: enjoy a couples massage!)

What’s better than a massage? A beachfront massage with your partner or best friend!

After days of exploring, hiking, and adventuring, your muscles deserve some TLC. While there are plenty of places to get a massage in Costa Rica, nothing beats listening to the waves while unwinding in a breezy cabana right on the sand.

These beachfront massages are a bit of a splurge, but are 100% worth it for the experience and peaceful relaxation.

To find one near you, keep an eye out for official massage cabanas near resorts and nice hotels, or simply search for the massage type you want (i.e “couples massage”) + your location.

92.) Check out the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles

Just outside San José in Cartago, you’ll find a basilica perfect for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a touch of Costa Rican magic!.

Local lore tells of a young girl who discovered a tiny Virgin Mary statue on a rock and took it back home, only for it to vanish overnight and reappear back on the rock she found it! The young girl took the statue again, but this time to a priest who locked it up overnight. The next morning? The statue was back on the rock!

Today, each August thousands of locals embark on La Romería, a 22 kilometer pilgrimage to honor the Virgin Mary – visiting the famous rock and drinking from the fountain’s waters.

Stop by any time of year, though, to admire the beautiful interiors, explore the museum on the side, and witness the legendary Virgin Mary statue up close.

94.) Visit the National Science Museum

The National Science Museum (Museo de Ciencias Naturales La Salle) in San José is one of the most fascinating museums for the whole family, offering a deep dive into zoology, paleontology, and the natural world.

With over 70,000 specimens, it is one of the most comprehensive museums of its type in all of Latin America!

Visitors can explore exhibits on Costa Rican flora and fauna, including birds, reptiles, fish, fossils, shells, corals, skeletons, and so much more. The museum’s extensive collection of butterflies and shells is especially noteworthy!

95.) Visit the Children’s Museum

The Children’s Museum (Museo de los Niños) in San José is the perfect spot for families with young children, offering a fun, interactive, and educational experience for kids between the ages of 2 and 8.

The museum is packed with hands-on exhibits designed to spark curiosity and learning through play. In addition to its permanent displays, it frequently hosts fun special events as well!

For adults, there is also a small art museum with rotating exhibits and a fascinating prison history museum on the same premises, allowing you a bit of fun and learning too.

Most exhibits are only in Spanish, but employees and guides there often speak English. Having a translation app handy can be helpful, though!

96.) Visit the Cacao Museum

Located in Cahuita near Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, Cacao Trails Takyu Museo de Cacao offers a more laid-back and immersive experience compared to the larger, more formal museums on this list.

It provides a deep dive into the history of cacao in the region, its role in ancient and modern trade, and the beliefs and legends that have surrounded cacao for centuries. A tour also gives you the chance to see and taste chocolate at various stages of production while learning about traditional methods of chocolate making.

Beyond the museum, there is a beautiful garden filled with medicinal plants, as well as a restaurant serving traditional Costa Rican Caribbean food, though reservations are required.

97.) Visit the Costa Rican Art Museum

Located in San José, the Museo de Arte Costarricense may be small, but it is packed with incredible art and history – and best of all, admission is free.

Housed in a former airport terminal, this museum showcases an impressive collection of work in it’s small space all from local, Costa Rican artists.

From outdoor sculptures to paintings and rotating exhibits inside, every corner of the space is thoughtfully curated to highlight the country’s artistic talent.

98.) Visit the Jade Museum

Did you know that San José is home to the largest collection of pre-Columbian jade in the entire world?

The Jade Museum (Museo del Jade) houses more than 7,000 artifacts, from jade and ceramics to stone carvings and more, giving you a fascinating look into Costa Rica’s ancient history.

With five permanent exhibits and a rotating selection of temporary ones, there’s always something to see. Plus, if you time your visit right, you might get to experience one of their “cultural mornings” (where you can enjoy interactive tours), a hands-on workshop, or even one of their special events!

99.) Visit the National Museum

Housed in San José, the National Museum of Costa Rica (Museo Nacional de Costa Rica) isn’t just a museum – it’s a piece of history itself. This is the very spot where, in 1948, former Costa Rican president José Figueres famously abolished the army!

Therefore, this museum is perfect for history buffs most of all, but really any culture lovers or those curious about Costa Rica’s story.

Inside the museum, you’ll find archaeology exhibits, tons historical artifacts, and rotating temporary exhibitions. Don’t miss the gardens on the premises either, where you’ll be able to spot butterflies and other wildlife!

100.) Visit the Central Bank Museum (AKA the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum)

Located in the heart of San José, the Central Bank Museum (Museo del Banco Central), also known as the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, is a top point of interest for history buffs, currency collectors, or anyone interested in how money has shaped Costa Rica over the centuries!

This numismatic museum holds the largest collection of Costa Rican coins and banknotes in the world, featuring currency from the pre-Columbian era to the modern day.

Walking through the museum, you’ll learn about economic, social, and political changes within Costa Rica and how they are reflected in the country’s money.

In addition to its permanent exhibits, there are always new rotating temporary exhibits that explore different aspects of Costa Rica’s rich financial and cultural past.
